Zohar Acharei Mot
Continued from previous DZ
#254
After the destructive angels (מלאכי חבלה) wander with the wicked souls around the world, they return these souls to their graves. There, the souls witness the worms of the body gnawing at their flesh, and the souls grieve over their corpses. Sorcerers then go to the cemetery with their sorcery and create an image of a human being, sacrificing a goat before it. Afterward, they bring the goat to that grave, and the image (צלם, Tzelem) of the wicked is broken into four parts, placed at the four corners of the grave. Then they continue their sorcery, and groups of evil spirits gather, bringing the soul (level of Nefesh)

#255
Rabbi Yossi said: “Every person possesses a Nefesh (lower level of the soul). This refers to the animalistic soul (Nefesh Behemit). There is also a higher Nefesh, which is a spiritual soul. If a person merits this higher Nefesh, they are crowned with a higher level called Ruach, as it is written, “עַד יֵעָרֶה עָלֵינוּ רוּחַ מִמָּרוֹם.” “Until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high” (Isaiah 32:15).
Then, the person is stirred with a higher awakening, enabling him to perceive the ways of the Holy King. If the person merits the Ruach, they are crowned with a higher holy level that encompasses everything, called Neshamah, which is referred to as the divine soul (נשמת אלוה).

Notes:
The Zohar illustrates a person’s spiritual elevation. One begins with the basic level of the soul, Nefesh, which is the life force. Through merit and spiritual effort, one can ascend to a higher level of connection with the soul level of Ruach and ultimately achieve the level of Neshamah. Each level brings the individual closer to the Light, allowing for a more profound understanding of the spiritual system and the ways of the Creator, blessed be He.
