Daily Zohar # 4900 – Beresheet – The new heavens and the new earth
Daily Zohar 4900

Zohar Beresheet

#231
Anakim, the fifth kind. These are those who belittle the ones about whom it is said: “וַעֲנָקִים לְגַרְגְּרוֹתֶיךָ” “And chains around your neck” (Proverbs 1:9) — referring to the Jewish people who observe the Torah. The Anakim are the fifth type of the Erev Rav that mingled with Israel. They demean and degrade those about whom it is said, “and chains around your neck,” which refers to the Israelites who uphold the Torah. About them, it is said: “רְפָאִים יֵחָשְׁבוּ אַף הֵם כַּעֲנָקִים” “They shall be counted as Rephaim, even as Anakim” (Deuteronomy 2:11) — they are weighed one against the other. Rephaim and Anakim are considered equivalent in their destructive impact. These are the ones who return the world to Tohu vaVohu — chaos and desolation. The secret of the matter: “וְהָאָרֶץ הָיְתָה תֹהוּ וָבֹהוּ” “And the earth was without form and void” (Genesis 1:2) — this refers to the destruction of the Temple. For the Temple is the foundation and settlement of the world. When it is destroyed, the world returns to chaos. These two types of Erev Rav (Rephaim and Anakim) that mingled with Israel are the ones who caused the destruction of the Holy Temple. When the light comes, which is the Holy One, Blessed be He, they will be erased from the world and perish. However, the redemption is not dependent on their erasure but on the obliteration of Amalek, as Hashem swears it: “כִּי-יָד עַל-כֵּס יָ-הּ” “For a hand is on the throne of Yah” (Exodus 17:16) — as explained previously (#222).
Notes:
The Anakim, the fifth group of the Erev Rav, represents those who scorn Torah scholars and the spiritually observant. Their arrogance contributes to the destruction of the spiritual foundation of the world — the Temple. Alongside the Rephaim, they are considered spiritually destructive forces. However, Israel’s redemption is ultimately tied not to them but to the complete elimination of Amalek, the ultimate adversary of Godliness.

Another interpretation of the verse: “אֵלֶּה תּוֹלְדוֹת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְהָאָרֶץ בְּהִבָּרְאָם” “These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created” (Genesis 2:4) — this refers to those about whom it is said: “אֵלֶּה אֱלֹהֶיךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל” “These are your gods, O Israel” (Exodus 32:4), the sin of the golden calf. On the day that those who said this will be wiped out, it will be as if on that very day, the Holy One, Blessed be He, created the heavens and the earth. As it is written: “בְּיוֹם עֲשׂוֹת ה’ אֱלֹהִים אֶרֶץ וְשָׁמָיִם” “On the day that Hashem God made earth and heaven.” (Genesis 2:4) At that time, the Holy One, Blessed be He, will be united with His Shechinah, and the world will be renewed, as it is written: “כִּי כַאֲשֶׁר הַשָּׁמַיִם הַחֲדָשִׁים וְהָאָרֶץ הַחֲדָשָׁה” “For as the new heavens and the new earth…” (Isaiah 66:22) — this refers to the phrase “on the day that Hashem God made,” meaning the day when the world will be renewed.
Notes:
When the sin of the golden calf is finally erased, it will be spiritually equivalent to a new Creation. On that day, Hashem will reunite with the Shechinah and the world will be renewed — as expressed in the prophecy of the new heavens and new earth (Isaiah 66:22). This links redemption with creation, showing that true spiritual renewal begins with the removal of idolatry.
