Daily Zohar # 4972 – Beresheet – Leviathan and his mate
Daily Zohar 4972

For this reason, because they change their form to clothe themselves in the bodies of human beings, it is not written about them “according to their kind” (לְמִינֵהוּ), as it is with those other angels drawn from Zeir Anpin. For it is written about them: וְאֵת כָּל עוֹף כָּנָף לְמִינֵהוּ—”And every winged fowl according to its kind” (Genesis 1:21), because those drawn from Zeir Anpin do not change from their kinds ever. They do not change to clothe themselves in the body of human beings like those other angels about whom it is not said “according to their kind.” That is, it is written about them: וְעוֹף יְעוֹפֵף עַל הָאָרֶץ—”And let fowl fly above the earth” (Genesis 1:20), and it is not written “according to their kind” (לְמִינֵהוּ). And if you say that there are among the angels themselves those who change one from another, certainly it is so, that there are among them those who differ from one another. That is, there are many levels among them. And for this reason, it is written: וּמִשָּׁם יִפָּרֵד—”And from there it was divided” (Genesis 2:10). For that parsa (curtain) below Atzilut, about which it is said וּמִשָּׁם יִפָּרֵד, from there and below are the three worlds of Beriah, Yetzirah, and Asiyah of separated worlds, in which the angels are found. Behold, that parsa makes many levels among them. As explained in the Introduction to the Wisdom of Kabbalah, page 31 (פתיחה לחכמת הקבלה), sections 144 to 154, in the explanation of these worlds and their many levels. See there.
Notes:
This Zohar passage interprets וְעוֹף יְעוֹפֵף עַל הָאָרֶץ (Genesis 1:20), וְאֵת כָּל עוֹף כָּנָף לְמִינֵהוּ (Genesis 1:21), and וּמִשָּׁם יִפָּרֵד (Genesis 2:10). Angels from Malchut (below Zeir Anpin’s chest) appear in human form, lacking לְמִינֵהוּ (“according to their kind”), while Zeir Anpin’s angels remain spiritual and fixed in kind. The parsa below Atzilut creates multiple angelic levels in Beriah, Yetzirah, and Asiyah.
Main Point: Malchut’s angels take human form, lacking לְמִינֵהוּ, unlike Zeir Anpin’s fixed spiritual angels. The parsa below Atzilut, per וּמִשָּׁם יִפָּרֵד, creates diverse angelic levels in the lower worlds.

“ויברא אלקים את התנינים הגדולים” “And He created, the great sea creatures ,” these are Leviathan and his mate. Leviathan is the secret of the Yessod of Zeir Anpin in the aspect of gadlut (greatness), as it is written below. And וְאֵת כָּל נֶפֶשׁ הַחַיָּה הָרֹמֶשֶׂת—”And every living soul that creeps” (Genesis 1:21),* this is the soul of that creeping creature to the four directions of the world. The meaning is: It interprets ‘רֹמֶשֶׂת’ (romeset, creeping) as romset (trampling), and says that she tramples and destroys in all directions of the world. He asks: And who is the creature that is trampling? And he answers: This refers to Lil-th.
Notes:
This Zohar passage interprets וְאֵת כָּל נֶפֶשׁ הַחַיָּה הָרֹמֶשֶׂת (Genesis 1:21), identifying Leviathan as Zeir Anpin’s Yessod in gadlut, and the “creeping creature” (romset, trampling) as Lil-th, a destructive klipah affecting all directions. This contrasts the divine zivug of Zeir Anpin and Nukva with Lil-th’s opposition, disrupting spiritual harmony.
Main Point: Leviathan is Zeir Anpin’s Yessod in gadlut, while the “creeping creature” (romset) is Lil-th, a destructive klipah, opposing the divine zivug and harmony of creation.

“אֲשֶׁר שָׁרְצוּ הַמַּיִם לְמִינֵיהֶם”—”Which the waters swarmed according to their kinds” (Genesis 1:21), etc., for the waters cause them to grow. This refers to Leviathan and his mate, which grow by means of the waters. For when the southern wind (רוח דרומית) comes, the waters are opened from their congelation caused by the northern wind (רוח צפון), and they are drawn to every direction. And the ships of the sea go and pass, as it is written: שָׁם אֳנִיּוֹת יְהַלֵּכוּן לִוְיָתָן זֶה יָצַרְתָּ לְשַׂחֶק בּוֹ—”There the ships go, Leviathan, this You formed to sport in it” (Psalms 104:26). Thus, Leviathan grows by means of the waters, and the matter of the southern wind that opens the waters has already been explained.
Notes:
(Psalms 104:26). Leviathan (Yessod of Zeir Anpin) and his mate (Nukva) grow through the waters, activated by the southern wind (Chassadim), which opens the congelation of the northern wind (judgments). This enables the zivug to produce divine abundance, symbolized by ships navigating the sea.
Main Point: Leviathan (Yessod of Zeir Anpin) and Nukva grow via the waters, opened by southern wind, enabling their zivug to produce divine abundance, per שָׁם אֳנִיּוֹת יְהַלֵּכוּן לִוְיָתָן.
