Zohar Vayetze
Continued from previous DZ
#172
Rabbi Abba opened and said: “וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל אַבְרָם אַחֲרֵי הִפָּרֶד לוֹט מֵעִמּוֹ… שָׂא נָא עֵינֶיךָ וּרְאֵה”, “And YHVH said to Abram after Lot had parted from him… Lift up now your eyes and look” (Genesis 13:14-15). He asks: Was the Land inherited according to the measure of Abraham’s physical eyesight? How far can a person see — three parasangs (one parasang is about 2.6 miles), four, or five parasangs? Yet the verse says: “כִּי אֶת כָּל הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר אַתָּה רוֹאֶה”, “For all the land that you see…” (Genesis 13:15).
Notes:
This Zohar passage from Vayetze begins Rabbi Abba’s teaching in honor of Rabbi Shimon. The question challenges the literal reading of Abraham’s promise: the Land’s inheritance cannot depend on ordinary eyesight, which is limited to a few parasangs. The verse points to a deeper, spiritual vision granted after Lot’s separation.
#173
And he answers: Rather, once he saw the four directions of the world, as it is written: “צָפוֹנָה וָנֶגְבָּה קֵדְמָה וָיָמָּה”, “northward and southward, eastward and westward” (Genesis 13:14), he saw the entire Land. For the four directions of the world encompass the whole world.
Another interpretation: The Holy One, blessed be He, raised him upon the Land of Israel, which is the secret of the Nukva, and showed him that she is bound to the four directions of the world, which are the secret of Chokhmah- Binah- Tiferet- Malchut of Zeir Anpin, which is the secret of the chariot. And then he saw everything. In the same way, whoever sees Rabbi Shimon sees the entire world. For he also includes the whole world; he is the joy of above and of below.
Notes:
Abraham’s vision of the four directions revealed the entire Land and chariot; likewise, seeing Rabbi Shimon reveals the whole world.
