#183
In the same way, one who tells and details his sins, all that he has done. And if you say, “Why is this needed?” It is because the accuser always stands before the Holy One, blessed be He, to tell and demand punishment for the transgressions of the people, and to demand judgment against them.
As soon as the person precedes himself and details his sins one by one, he leaves no opening for that accuser, and he cannot demand judgment against them.
For he always demands judgment first, and afterward tells and accuses: so-and-so did this.
And therefore, a person must precede him and detail his sins.
Notes:
This Zohar explains the spiritual value of confessing sins in detail. By openly enumerating transgressions before God, a person preempts the accuser (Sitra Achra) who stands ready to prosecute. This leaves no room for accusation, neutralizes the demand for judgment, and demonstrates repentance.
Before the soul ascends each night to the upper worlds, we are given a precious opportunity to cleanse it through Kriat Shema al HaMitah (Bedtime Shema) and the confession (Vidui) that accompanies it. The Zohar teaches that during sleep, the soul rises to give an accounting of its day, and any unrectified actions can create spiritual barriers above. By confessing our mistakes with sincerity, we remove the stains from the soul, weaken the power of the prosecuting forces, and restore harmony to our world. This act of humility opens the channels of mercy, allowing the soul to ascend in purity and return in the morning renewed with Divine Light. Before we sleep, we say, “בידך אפקיד רוחי” — “Into Your hand I entrust my spirit” (Tehillim 31:6). Hashem is trusted to judge us in mercy and return our soul in the morning.

When the accuser sees this, he has no opening of mouth against him, and then he is completely separated from him. And if he repents well, good for him; and if not, behold, the accuser is against him, and says: So-and-so who came before You, and confessed with insolence, rebelled against his Master, his sins were such-and-such.
Therefore, it is good that a person should be careful with all these things, so that he may be found a faithful servant before the Holy One, blessed be He.
Notes:
Detailed confession silences the accuser completely; true repentance removes him, making one a faithful servant before God.
