Zohar Beshalach
Continued from previous DZ
#207
“אָז יָשִׁיר מֹשֶׁה”— “Then Moses sang” (Exodus 15:1). Rabbi Yehuda opened: “בְּטֶרֶם אֶצָּרְךָ בַּבֶּטֶן יְדַעְתִּיךָ”— “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you” (Jeremiah 1:5), etc.
Happy is the portion of Israel, that the Holy One, blessed be He, desired them more than all other nations. And out of the great love He loved them, He raised up for them a true prophet and faithful shepherd, and aroused upon him the Holy Spirit more than all other faithful prophets, and brought him out from His own portion truly, that is, from what Jacob separated as tithe from his sons to the Holy One, blessed be He, which is the tribe of Levi. And since Levi was His, the Holy One, blessed be He, took him and adorned him with many crowns, and anointed him with the holy anointing oil from above. And then He brought out from his sons a holy spirit to the world and girded him with His holy girdles of great faith, which is Binah.
Notes:
This Zohar passage opens with the Song of the Sea (אָז יָשִׁיר מֹשֶׁה) and cites בְּטֶרֶם אֶצָּרְךָ (Jeremiah 1:5) to highlight Israel’s unique beloved status. God’s love led to Moses’ appointment as prophet and shepherd, drawn from Levi — Jacob’s tithe to God. Moses was crowned and anointed from above, girded with Binah’s faith, bringing holy spirit to the world. This emphasizes Moses’ supreme role and Israel’s special connection.
