Zohar Terumah
#175
This secret is given to the sages. At the time when the night is divided on this night of Shabbat, the Holy One, blessed be He, wants to enter the Garden of Eden. And this secret is that on the weekdays, the Holy One, blessed be He, enters the lower Garden of Eden that is in the world of Asiyah, to delight with the righteous who are there. But on Shabbat, on that night of Shabbat, the Holy One, blessed be He, enters the supernal Garden of Eden that is in the world of Beriah, in the secret of the supernal source, which is Binah. For the three worlds — Beriah, Yetzirah, and Asiyah — are the aspects of Binah, Tiferet, and Malchut, and Beriah is the aspect of Binah.
Notes:
During the six days of the week, the Holy One, blessed be He, enters the lower Garden of Eden — located in the world of Asiyah (corresponding to Malchut). There, He delights with the tzaddikim whose souls reside in that realm, sustaining and rejoicing in their merit.
But on Shabbat night, when Malchut begins her elevation — God ascends to the supernal Garden of Eden in the world of Beriah (creation), which corresponds to Binah. This “division of the night” (chatzot on Shabbat) marks the moment of transition: from lower delight to higher union, where the divine essence returns to its supernal root in Binah.
Shabbat night elevates the divine presence from Malchut/Asiyah to Binah/Beriah, allowing a deeper, more intimate communion in the source-realm. This secret is reserved for the sages because it discloses the cosmic rhythm of Shabbat: a time when the worlds ascend, Malchut unites upward, and God “enters” the higher Eden to draw down supernal light and blessing for the entire week ahead.
The teaching underscores Shabbat as the axis of rectification — when the lower is elevated to the supernal, and divine delight shifts from the realm of action to the realm of pure source, enabling continued flow of holiness into creation.
