Continued from previous DZ
#181
At midnight of the night of Shabbat, when the sages awaken for their marital union, the supernal spirit with which they were crowned at the time the day was sanctified — behold, at the time when they are sleeping in their beds, and their other souls desire to ascend and behold the honor of the King — then that supernal spirit that descended at the entry of Shabbat takes that neshama and they ascend above, and the other neshama bathes In the fragrances that are in the Garden of Eden, and see there what they see.
#182
And when the spirit descends to dwell in its place at midnight, that neshama also returns to its place. And the sages must recite one verse of the awakening of that supernal holy spirit of the crown of Shabbat — that is: “רוח יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים עָלַי יַעַן מָשַׁח יְהוָה אֹתִי לְבַשֵּׂר עֲנָוִים” “The spirit of YHVH Elohim is upon me, because YHVH has anointed me to bring good news to the humble” etc. (Isaiah 61:1), “בְּלֶכְתָּם יֵלְכוּ וּבְעָמְדָם יַעֲמֹדוּ וּבְהִנָּשְׂאָם מֵעַל הָאָרֶץ” “When they went, they went; and when they stood, they stood; and when they were lifted up from the earth” etc. (Ezekiel 1:21), “אֶל אֲשֶׁר יִהְיֶה שָׁם הָרוּחַ לָלֶכֶת יֵלְכוּ” “To wherever the spirit was to go, they went” etc. (Ezekiel 1:12). Because they are crowned with that spirit in the awakening of their union in the joy of the mitzvah, and there will be a drawing down of that supernal spirit of Shabbat in that union of the mitzvah.
Notes:
These paragraphs describe the spiritual process during Shabbat night intimacy (תשמיש, tashmish) of the sages: At midnight, the extra supernal spirit (neshama yeteira / ruach ha-elyon) that crowned them at Shabbat’s entry takes the higher soul upward to behold divine honor, while the lower soul bathes in Eden’s fragrances and receives visions. Upon the spirit’s return at midnight, the sages recite verses from Isaiah 61 and Ezekiel 1 (describing the movement of the divine chariot and spirit) to awaken and sustain this holy spirit’s presence during the union. This ensures the act draws down and sustains the supernal Shabbat spirit through the mitzvah of procreation, producing holy offspring in an elevated state of holiness.
