Daily Zohar # 5164 – Vayikra – Awake, awake, utter a song
Daily Zohar 5164

Zohar Vayikra
Continued from previous DZ
#333
Deborah, who came to praise the praise of the Holy King, said: “יְהוָה בְּצֵאתְךָ מִשֵּׂעִיר בְּצַעְדְּךָ מִשְּׂדֵה אֱדוֹם” “YHVH, when You went forth from Seir, when You marched from the field of Edom” (Judges 5:4).
This teaches that the Holy One, blessed be He, offered all the other nations to receive the Torah, but they did not want it. He asks: Was it not revealed before Him that they would not want it? And why did He offer it to them?
And he answers: Rather, so that they would have no opening of the mouth — that if the Holy One, blessed be He, had given them the Torah, they would have kept it. And therefore He offered it to them.
And all these verses that Deborah said — everything is in the secret of Chokhmah, until that time when she praised herself, as it is said: “עַד שַׁקַּמְתִּי דְבוֹרָה שַׁקַּמְתִּי אֵם בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל” “Until I, Deborah, arose; I arose, a mother in Israel” (Judges 5:7) — which we have established means that at that moment the spirit of prophecy departed from her. And because of this she said: “עוּרִי עוּרִי דְבוֹרָה עוּרִי עוּרִי דַּבְּרִי שִׁיר” “Awake, awake, Deborah; awake, awake, utter a song” (Judges 5:12) — that is, she needed to awaken again the spirit of prophecy.
Notes:
The Zohar highlights Deborah’s unique song of praise. The verse “YHVH, when You went forth from Seir…” alludes to God offering the Torah to all nations (represented by Seir/Edom), but they refused. This removes any future claim they might have had.
Deborah’s song is steeped in the secret of Chokhmah. When she praised herself (“Until I, Deborah, arose”), the spirit of prophecy momentarily left her, requiring her to awaken it again with the call “Awake, awake, Deborah.” This teaches both the greatness of her prophecy and the delicate nature of the prophetic spirit, which can depart even from the greatest prophets when self-praise enters. Deborah’s song thus serves as both a historical praise of God’s revelation and a personal rectification of her own prophetic state.
