Rabbi Chiya opened and said: “וְאַתָּה אַל תִּירָא עַבְדִּי יַעֲקֹב” etc. “And you, do not fear, My servant Jacob” etc. (Jeremiah 30:10). “For behold, I will save you from afar”. He asks, “From afar?” It should have said, “from near.”
And behold, we have established that this verse, “from afar,” is as it is said: “וְשָׁבוּ מֵאֶרֶץ מֶרְחָק” (“And they shall return from the land of far away,” Jeremiah 31:8). It revolves around the concept of place (מקום), but “from afar” also means as it is written: “מֵרָחוֹק יְהוָה נִרְאָה לִי” (“From afar YHVH appeared to me,” Jeremiah 31:3), and “מִמֶּרְחָק תָּבִיא לַחְמָהּ” (“She brings her bread from afar,” Proverbs 31:14). What is it? It is the depth of the river, which is Chokhmah (Wisdom), called “far,” as it is said: “אָמַרְתִּי אֶחְכְּמָה וְהִיא רְחוֹקָה מִמֶּנִּי” (“I said, I will be wise, but it is far from me,” Ecclesiastes 7:23). This is the place from which that river, which is Binah, is drawn and flows.
Notes:
Rabbi Chiya interprets the promise of redemption—“I will save you from afar”—as referring to the supernal source in Chokhmah, called “far” because of its great hiddenness. Redemption comes from the deepest, most concealed levels—the depth of the river of Binah that flows from Chokhmah. This teaches that even in the darkest exile, salvation emerges from the highest and most distant supernal roots, bringing complete rectification and return. The verse thus offers profound comfort, showing that divine salvation originates from the most exalted and hidden realms.
