Daily Zohar # 5184 – Vayikra – When the night darkens, they come out
Daily Zohar 5184

Zohar Vayikra

#368
Come and see: At the time when the night darkens, the gates of the upper and lower beings are found closed. And all those far ones — that is, the external ones (חיצונים , klipot) — awaken and go roaming throughout the world. They circle the bodies of the children of man and surround their places and beds, and they see the form of the Holy King who guards them, and they are afraid to harm, for the people strengthen themselves in their beds with the words of the Holy Name, and they are protected. And the souls of the children of man ascend, each one as is fitting for her. And we have already established: Fortunate is the portion of the tzaddikim whose soul ascends above at the time of their sleep, and they do not tarry in a place that is not necessary.
#369
When the night is divided, a herald stands and proclaims, and the gates are opened. Then a certain spirit from the north side awakens — which is the illumination of Chokhmah in the left line — and it strikes the harp of David, which is Malchut, and it plays by itself, and she praises the King, Zeir Anpin. And the Holy One, blessed be He, delights with the tzaddikim in the Garden of Eden.
Notes:
The Zohar describes the spiritual reality of the night. When darkness falls, the gates close and impure forces roam, but the Holy Name and the merit of the righteous protect people in their beds. The souls of the tzaddikim ascend safely to higher realms.
At midnight (“when the night is divided”), the gates reopen. A spirit from the left side (Chokhmah of the left) strikes David’s harp (Malchut), causing it to play by itself in praise of Zeir Anpin (the King). At this sacred hour, Hashem delights with the tzaddikim in Gan Eden. This teaches the profound holiness of midnight, when Malchut rises in praise, and the righteous souls join the divine delight.
