Daily Zohar # 5235 – Beresheet – For on the day you eat from it you shall surely die
Daily Zohar 5235

We see that Abraham ate from the Tree of Knowledge, and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets ate from the Tree of Knowledge, and with all this they lived. But the answer is that this tree, the Tree of Knowledge, is a tree of death. That is, whoever takes it by itself alone dies, for he has taken the poison of death. The meaning is that the Tree of Knowledge is the Nukva of Zeir Anpin, as above, and one must always unite her with the other trees of the garden, that is, with the sefirot of Zeir Anpin. And then it is possible to eat and receive the flow of sustenance from her, which is the Tree of Knowledge. And in this manner Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets ate from her. But one who does not unite the Nukva with Zeir Anpin, her Husband, but draws flow from her herself alone, then she is the poison of death. And about this the verse says, “כִּי בְּיוֹם אֲכָלְךָ מִמֶּנּוּ מוֹת תָּמוּת” “for on the day you eat from it you shall surely die” (Genesis 2:17). That is, from her alone, because he separates and cuts the plantings, meaning that he separates between the Holy One, blessed be He, and His Shechinah. And therefore his judgment is death.
Notes:
The Tree of Knowledge (Nukva of Zeir Anpin) becomes a tree of death only when one draws from it alone, without uniting it with Zeir Anpin. The patriarchs and prophets ate from it properly by uniting the Nukva with her Husband, and therefore they lived. Separating them is the cutting of the plantings that brings death.

Rabbi Yehuda asked Rabbi Shimon, What is this that we have learned, that Adam the first man drew his foreskin — what is its meaning? He said to him, That he separated the holy covenant, that is Yessod of Zeir Anpin, from its place and its portion, that is from the Shechinah. And therefore he certainly drew the foreskin, for he abandoned the holy covenant, that is the unification of the Holy One, blessed be He, and His Shechinah, and clung to the foreskin, that is the shell that separates between the Holy One, blessed be He, and His Shechinah, and was persuaded by the words of the serpent.
Notes:
Adam’s “drawing of the foreskin” means that he separated Yessod of Zeir Anpin from the Shechinah. By abandoning the holy covenant of unification, he clung to the shell of separation and followed the serpent’s advice.
