#457
Rabbi Elazar said, At the time that Cain sinned, he was afraid, for he saw before him kinds of armed camps that came to kill him. And when he did repentance, what did he say? He said, “הֵן גֵּרַשְׁתָּ אֹתִי הַיּוֹם מֵעַל פְּנֵי הָאֲדָמָה וּמִפָּנֶיךָ אֶסָּתֵר וְהָיָה כָל מֹצְאִי יַהַרְגֵנִי” “Behold, You have driven me out this day from upon the face of the ground (הָאֲדָמָה), and from Your face I shall be hidden, and it shall be that whoever finds me will kill me” (Genesis 4:14). That is, he was afraid of those camps mentioned above that came to kill him. What is the meaning of “וּמִפָּנֶיךָ אֶסָּתֵר” “from Your face I shall be hidden.” It is that he said, I will be hidden and destroyed from my building. For Cain was a man of the ground(הָאֲדָמָה, earth), and since He drove him out from upon the face of the ground, therefore all his building was taken apart, and nothing remained for him in the world.
Rabbi Abba said, In the meaning of the verse “and from Your face I shall be hidden,” it is as it is written, “וְלֹא הִסְתִּיר פָּנָיו מִמֶּנּוּ” “and He has not hidden His face from him” (Psalms 22:25), and likewise “וַיַּסְתֵּר מֹשֶׁה פָּנָיו” “And Moses hid his face” (Exodus 3:6). And about this Cain said “from Your face I shall be hidden,” meaning he said, I will be hidden from Your face so that they will not watch over me, and therefore whoever finds me will kill me.
Notes:
After his sin, Cain feared the armed camps that came against him. “From Your face I shall be hidden” means either that his whole structure as a man of the ground was destroyed, or that the divine face would no longer watch over him and protect him.

“וַיָּשֶׂם ה’ לְקַיִן אוֹת לְבִלְתִּי וְגוֹ’” “And YHVH set a sign for Cain, lest…” (Genesis 4:15). What is the sign. It is one letter from the twenty-two letters of the Torah, that is the letter Vav, which He placed upon him to protect him. For the letter Vav among the letters is the secret of Yessod, and it is the secret of the letter of the covenant, which he merited after he did repentance and accepted upon himself the guarding of the covenant.
Rabbi Yehuda said, What is this that is written, “וַיְהִי בִּהְיוֹתָם בַּשָּׂדֶה” “And it came to pass when they were in the field” (Genesis 4:8). And he says “in the field” means a woman. And therefore, because of a woman, he rose and killed Abel. For from the side of woman, which is the left side, he inherited the power of murder, which is the side of Sam-el, who caused death to the whole world by tempting Adam and Eve with the Tree of Knowledge. And Cain was jealous of Abel over his females, that is, over an extra Nukva that Abel had.
The meaning is that the secret of the souls of Cain and Abel has been explained: Abel is the secret of “מי” “Mi,” and Cain is the secret of “אליה” “Eleh.” See there. And it is known that “Mi” is drawn from Father and Mother of the inner aspect, and “Eleh” from Israel Saba and Tevunah. It has also been explained that in Father and Mother there are two females, which are the secret of the Lock and the Key (מנעולא ומפתחא), but to Israel Saba and Tevunah they emanated in the secret of the Key alone, which is one female. And it is found that Cain, who was drawn from the aspect of “Eleh,” had only one Nukva from the aspect of the Key, but Abel had two females, from the Lock and from the Key. And this is the secret that Cain was jealous of Abel over an extra Nukva that he had, that is, over the Nukva of the aspect of the Lock. And the matter of his killing Abel —
Rabbi Chiya said, that is, he raises a difficulty on Rabbi Yehuda: But we see the reason for his killing Abel, as it is written, “וַיִּחַר לְקַיִן” “And Cain was very angry…” (Genesis 4:5), which is because his offering was not accepted, and not because of a Nukva as Rabbi Yehuda said. Rabbi Yehuda said to him, So it is that Cain was angry because his offering was not accepted, and everything was before him at the time that he killed Abel; that is, also the jealousy over the extra Nukva, as above.
Notes:
The sign given to Cain was the letter Vav, the secret of Yessod and the covenant, granted after his repentance. Rabbi Yehuda explains that “שָּׂדֶה” “field” alludes to a woman, and Cain’s murderous power came from the left side. He was also jealous that Abel had an extra female. Rabbi Chiya notes the plain reason for the rejected offering; Rabbi Yehuda says both causes were present together.
