And Rabbi Yehuda said, What is the meaning of the verse, “הֲלוֹא אִם תֵּיטִיב שְׂאֵת” “If you do well, shall there not be lifting up?” (Genesis 4:7). And he says, Rather, so the Holy One, blessed be He, said to him: If you improve your deeds — lifting up. And he asks again, What is “lifting up”? And he says that it is as it is written about Reuben the firstborn of Jacob, “יֶתֶר שְׂאֵת” “the excellency of dignity” (Genesis 49:3). For the firstborn always has a higher standing and an advantage in every matter, and it depends on his deeds. And therefore the Holy One, blessed be He, said to him, “If you do well — lifting up, and if you do not do well…” (Genesis 4:7).
Notes:
“Lifting up” is the extra standing of the firstborn. Cain was told that this advantage would remain only if he improved his deeds.

He asks, ” What is ‘at the opening ‘ in the verse ‘לַפֶּתַח חַטָּאת רֹבֵץ’ (sin crouches at the opening) (Genesis 4:7)? And he says that it is the upper opening, from which judgments go out upon the evil deeds of the people of the world. “Opening” means as it is written, “פִּתְחוּ לִי שַׁעֲרֵי צֶדֶק” “Open for me the gates of righteousness” (Psalms 118:19), that is the gates of Malchut who is called Righteousness. And at that opening of Malchut, “sin crouches,” whose meaning is the Angel of Death, and he is destined to collect from you.
Notes:
The “opening” is the gate of Malchut, from which judgments go out. Sin that crouches there is the Angel of Death, waiting to exact payment for evil deeds.
