Rabbi Elazar says that those who study the Torah to reveal light do not die by the evil inclination that is the angel of death. They are protected because they holds fast to the Tree of Life. The study of Torah even cleanse the corporeal body and Tzadikim keep a pure body even after their soul leaves the body.
The Tzadik removes all selfish desires from himself and his body is sustained by pure light that is opposite to the negative side that is based on desires for the self that draws the aspect of death. Those desires give stronger connection to the evil side that destroys us in this world and take from our merits in the world to come.

Jacob was pure and connected to the Torah. As a righteous man and as a chariot for the central column he shouldn’t have fear from the other-side that couldn’t control him.
We read in Genesis 28:15 that before he is to meet with Esau, God promised him protection;
“Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
It also said (Genesis 32:2) “and the angels of God met him”
