Zohar Bechukotai
The portion of this week is Bamidbar but because we have only four paragraph left to finish the study of Zohar Bechukotai, i’ve added them here and tomorrow. We will continue with Bamidbar with DZ 2740.
#58
It’s like a person who loves a woman living next to a leather production shops that is known to have a very bad smell. If she wasn’t there, he would never go into this place but since she lives there, that place is like a perfume market with great pleasing scents.
#59
So in the case of the Israelites, even if they are in exile that is the aspect of bad smells, God doesn’t ignore or reject us. Because of his bride, the Shechina that he loves so much, he keeps protecting us.
Lesson:
The sense of smell is pure because not like the other senses it wasn’t part of the first sin of Adam and Eve. In Zohar Balak #30 we read about a special child, ‘The Yenuka’ that didn’t approach to greet two of Rabbi Shimon’s students that came to his home because he smells from their garments that they missed the time of the Shema Israel prayer. They had good reason for that but nevertheless, the child could sense and smell their spiritual garments. There were some kabbalists that without looking at a person could tell a lot about him and his life.
The Ketoret that was burnt every day in the Holy Temple had a strong scent and it ascended up as a column of smoke to heaven. It protected the Holy Temple from everything negative.
The bad scent mentioned above of the leather during its process is only on a physical level. The Shechina among us gives us the pure and elevated scent that attracts God to us. When Mashiach comes he will evaluate the merits of people by their scent.
Isaiah 11:3
“And He will smell the fear (Awe) of YHVH, And He will not judge by what His eyes see, Nor make a decision by what His ears hear;”
Those who won’t have the special pure scent won’t have merits for the Resurrection and the immortal state at the time when Mashiach rules the world.
We should keep our Zohar studies, give Tzedakah and do good on any opportunity that comes our way. These are the best tools to come closer to the Shechina and increase the scent that would separates us from the bad. With scented spiritual garments we have protection in this world and merits for the world to come.
