Deuteronomy 25:5,6
“When brothers live together and one (אַחַד) of them dies and has no son, the wife of the deceased shall not be married outside the family to a strange man. Her husband’s brother shall go in to her and take her to himself as wife and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her.”
“It shall be that the firstborn whom she bears shall assume the name of his dead brother, so that his name will not be blotted out from Israel.
The word אַחַד, ‘one’ represent the unity of husband and wife. The first two letters of the word are ‘אח’ that means ‘brother’ and the letter Dalet, ד that represents the wife. Together they are one. The unification of marriage is to create continuation and when the husband dies without having children his soul is in pain. The older brother that is from the same spiritual line has the opportunity to fulfil the unification of אַחַד, bringing the אח and the ד together and create continuation for his brother. If he refuse then they go through a process that releases the widow and the brother from the needed unification for the soul of the brother..
The brother that comes to marry his brother’s wife with the act of unification should have a pure consciousness to make the proper spiritual connection and link his brother’s soul to the wife. He should serve as a channel to his brother’s soul that will come into his wife and bring a child to the world.
The Zohar explains that the woman is the aspect of the letter ד Dalet. When the living brother comes without pure consciousness but for the pleasure of himself, he removes the ‘י’ (letter Yod) on the top right of the letter that represent the higher consciousness. The letter Dalet then becomes ‘ר’ (Resh) that represents poorness and lack of light. The word ‘אחד’ ‘one’ becomes ‘אחר’ ‘other’ as in the ‘other-side’. The spilling of seed with negative/self consciousness brings judgment because of instead of unification, the brother cause greater separation.
The Zohar (Lech Lecha #471) brings a story about a person who was blessed after marrying his brother’s wife. He called the child after his brother’s name.
The Zohar bring teh example of the Er, the son of Yehuda that needed to Levirate his brother’s wife, Tamar, but he spilled his seeds causing greater negativity that caused him to die (Genesis 38:6-10).

Boaz was righteous and he Levirate Ruth (Ruth 4:13) with the proper consciousness. For that righteous act they merited to have the Mashiach to come from their descendants.
