Numbers 22:5
“Then he sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor at Pethora, which is on the River in the land of the sons of his people, to call him, saying: “Look, a people has come from Egypt. See, they cover the face of the earth and are settling next to me!”
He asks, what is “on the river?” and answers, Balaam, who gave the evil eye on the river that is Yessod of Zeir Anpin that sustains Israel. As we read;
Isaiah 66:12
“For thus says YHVH: “Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, And the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream. Then you shall feed; On her sides shall you be carried, And be dandled on her knees.”
Balaam came to Pethora, which is Malchut of the other-side, and he was taunting Israel. Israel drew nourishments from the river, and Balaam wanted to draw abundance from the same river to his Malchut, which is called Pethora. That is why the verse says Pethora (who is fighting) ‘on the river’ to pull it to her side.

Rabbi Aba said, surely all the things that cause leprosy were in Balaam, but how do we know that Balaam did adultery? And he replies because it is written;
Numbers 31:16
“Look, these women caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to trespass against YHVH in the incident of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of YHVH.”
“Trespass against YHVH ” to tell about idol worship of Peor. Adultery was Balaam’s connection to Cozbi, daughter of Tur. False testimony was in Balaam because it is written (Numbers 24:16) “And has the knowledge of the Most High”, and he would not even know why his animal behaved as she did.
We know that Balaam corrupted the law when it says, “I will advise you”
Numbers 24:14
“And now, indeed, I am going to my people. Come, I will advise you what these people will do to your people in the latter days.”
Balaam deviated from the law, which he did not observe, and gave bad advice to hurt Israel.
