Exodus 14:19
“וַיִּסַּע מַלְאַךְ הָאֱלֹהִים הַהֹלֵךְ לִפְנֵי מַחֲנֵה יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיֵּלֶךְ מֵאַחֲרֵיהֶם וַיִּסַּע עַמּוּד הֶעָנָן מִפְּנֵיהֶם וַיַּעֲמֹד מֵאַחֲרֵיהֶם.”
“And the Angel of God, who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud went from before them and stood behind them.”

He asks, who is this pillar of the cloud? Rabbi Yossi said this is a cloud that is always seen with the Shechina, which is the angel Michael. And this is the cloud in which Moses entered (to go up the mountain Exodus 24:18). Rabbi Abba said, It is written, “And YHVH went before them by day in a pillar of cloud” (Exodus 13:21), so it is not Michael, the Shekinah, but it is the help of the tzadik, who is Yessod of Zeir Anpin that spreads Chassadim on Chokmah of Malchut, and then Malchut can illuminate in its level. Therefore, the cloud travels during the day, which is the time of the illumination of Chassadim, as it is written;
Psalm 42:9
“יוֹמָם יְצַוֶּה יְהוָה חַסְדּוֹ וּבַלַּיְלָה שירה [שִׁירוֹ] עִמִּי תְּפִלָּה לְאֵל חַיָּי.”
“YHVH will command His Chassadim in the daytime, And in the night His song shall be with me— A prayer to the God of my life.”
The cloud came from the side of Chessed, and another cloud travels at night from the side of Malchut, and It is called the pillar of fire.

Rabbi Shimon said the pillar of the cloud of the day is Abraham, who is Chessed. The pillar of fire at night is Yitzchak, who is Gevurah, and both are in the Shechina, which is the level of the Tzadik’s help that Rabbi Abba said.

“And the Angel of God traveled…” means that the travel was from the side of Chessed, that is, the inner Light, to adhere to the side of Gevurah, which is the outer light because the time has come to raise judgment.
