Zohar Vayeshev

#153
Genesis 38:3
“וַתַּהַר וַתֵּלֶד בֵּן וַיִּקְרָא אֶת שְׁמוֹ עֵר.”
“So she conceived and bore a son, and he called his name Er.”
The names ‘ער’ ‘Er’ and ‘רע’ ‘Ra’ (evil) have the same letters. This is because ער Er came from the side of the evil inclination. Therefore, it is written, “and he called his name,” not just “and he called him.” In the case of Jacob, it is written, “and he called him,” because the Holy One, Blessed be He, named him Jacob. Here, it is written “his name,” which includes another level of the impurity that was born with him, and this is ‘ער רע’ ‘Er Ra’ (Evil Er), which is all one, meaning their letters are the same.
#154
And afterward, even with the second son, the situation did not sweeten enough to return to holiness until Shelah came, who was the most important among them all. It is written;
Genesis 38:7
“וַיְהִי עֵר בְּכוֹר יְהוּדָה רַע בְּעֵינֵי יְהוָה וַיְמִתֵהוּ יְהוָה.”
“But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of YHVH, and YHVH killed him.”
Here it is written ‘wicked,’ and it is written (Genesis 8:21) “כִּי יֵצֶר לֵב הָאָדָם רַע מִנְּעֻרָיו” “For the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth.” What does it mean? The wasting of seed. Similarly, here, it means that he shed blood, meaning that he spilled seeds upon the ground, and for this reason, “and YHVH killed him.” After that, it is written;
Genesis 38:8
“וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוּדָה לְאוֹנָן בֹּא אֶל אֵשֶׁת אָחִיךָ וְיַבֵּם אֹתָהּ וְהָקֵם זֶרַע לְאָחִיךָ.”
“And Judah said to Onan, “Go into your brother’s wife and marry her, and raise up an heir to your brother.”

Isaiah 41:25
“הַעִירוֹתִי מִצָּפוֹן וַיַּאת מִמִּזְרַח שֶׁמֶשׁ יִקְרָא בִשְׁמִי וְיָבֹא סְגָנִים כְּמוֹ חֹמֶר וּכְמוֹ יוֹצֵר יִרְמָס טִיט.”
“I have raised up one from the north, And he shall come; From the rising of the sun he shall call on My name; And he shall come against princes as though mortar, As the potter treads clay.”
Rabbi Shimon quotes this verse and says, how foolish are the people, who do not know and do not look to understand the ways of the Holy One, Blessed be He, for they all sleep, and sleep does not depart from the holes of their eyes.
Lesson;
Rabbi Shimon quotes this verse without explanation. It has deep secrets, but people may have open eyes, but their brain is asleep because they are not looking for the Light in the sacred scriptures.
Hashem awakens from the north that is the side of Gevurah and Judgment the forces that will go against Israel, Gog, and Iran, and from the East that is Tiferet, Center column, will come Mashiach and tread over them as “the potter treads clay.”
