413. אַשְׁרֵי חֶלְקָם שֶׁל הַצַּדִּיקִים בָּעוֹלָם הַזֶּה וּבָעוֹלָם הַבָּא. עֲלֵיהֶם כָּתוּב (תהלים ה) וְיִשְׂמְחוּ כָל חוֹסֵי בָךְ לְעוֹלָם יְרַנֵּנוּ וְתָסֵךְ עָלֵימוֹ וְיַעְלְצוּ בְךָ אֹהֲבֵי שְׁמֶךָ. וְכָתוּב (שם קמ) אַךְ צַדִּיקִים יוֹדוּ לִשְׁמֶךָ יֵשְׁבוּ יְשָׁרִים אֶת פָּנֶיךָ. וְכָתוּב (שם ט) וְיִבְטְחוּ בְךָ יוֹדְעֵי שְׁמֶךָ כִּי לֹא עָזַבְתָּ דֹּרְשֶׁיךָ ה’. בָּרוּךְ יְיָ לְעוֹלָם אָמֵן וְאָמֵן. יִמְלֹךְ יְיָ לְעוֹלָם אָמֵן וְאָמֵן.

Rabbi Yitzchak said: It is written, “אַחַת, שָׁאַלְתִּי מֵאֵת-יְהוָה אוֹתָהּ אֲבַקֵּשׁ: שִׁבְתִּי בְּבֵית-יְהוָה, כָּל-יְמֵי חַיַּי לַחֲזוֹת בְּנֹעַם-יְהוָה וּלְבַקֵּר בְּהֵיכָלוֹ” “One thing I ask of Hashem, that I shall seek… to behold the pleasantness of Hashem” (Psalms 27:4). Happy are the righteous, for many upper treasures are hidden for them in that world, which is Binah, where the Holy One, blessed be He, delights in them in those worlds. As we have established, this verse — “to behold the pleasantness of Hashem” — refers to the radiance of Atika, which flows into Binah. Rabbi Yitzchak disagrees with Rabbi Yehuda, who stated that the verse, “Surely a flood of great waters shall not reach him” (Psalms 32:6), refers to the lights of Atika, which are unattainable. Instead, there are righteous ones who merit even this. Rabbi Chizkiyah said: From here we learn that there are righteous who merit the light of Atika, as it is written: “עַיִן לֹא רָאָתָה אֱלֹהִים זוּלָתְךָ יַעֲשֶׂה לִמְחַכֵּה לוֹ” “No eye has seen, O God, besides You, what He will do for those who wait for Him” (Isaiah 64:3). He asks: It should have said “You shall do (תַּעֲשֶׂה)” [in second-person], since it already says “besides You” in direct address. He answers: Rather, the word “He will do (יַעֲשֶׂה)” is precise — because it refers to the exaltedness of Atika, it therefore speaks in the third person, hidden speech. And likewise, the verse: “Behold, I will add fifteen years to your life” (Isaiah 38:5) — should have said, “I will add (אוסיף)” since it begins with “Behold, I (הנני)…” in the first person. But the hidden wording “He will add (יוֹסִף)” alludes to Atika, and this is because life flows from Mazal, that is, from the beard (dikna) of Atika. Thus: “הַשְׁלֵךְ עַל ה’ יְהָבְךָ” “Cast your burden upon Hashem” (Psalms 55:23) — means above Hashem, to Mazal, since this is a prayer for sustenance, as previously established. And it is written: “And she prayed ‘upon’ Hashem” (I Samuel 1:10) — also meaning Mazal, above Hashem since this was a prayer for children. And it is all one, for it is drawn from Mazal, which is the beard of Atika Kadisha. Hence, it is proven that some can draw abundance even from Atika Kadisha, contrary to Rabbi Yehuda’s assertion that it is unattainable.
Notes:
The Talmud (Moed Katan 28:a) says: “ אָמַר רָבָא: חַיֵּי, בְּנֵי וּמְזוֹנֵי, לָא בִּזְכוּתָא תַּלְיָא מִילְּתָא, אֶלָּא בְּמַזָּלָא תַּלְיָא מִילְּתָא” “Children, life, and sustenance depend not on merit, but on mazal.”
Thus, the expressions “על ה’,” “upon Hashem,” and “she prayed upon Hashem” are reinterpreted to mean above Z “A, aimed at Atika.
Some of the greatest tzaddikim — can access the highest level of Atika Kadisha despite its deep concealment. While one view (Rabbi Yehuda) holds this level is beyond reach, others (Rabbi Yitzchak, Rabbi Chizkiyah) show from scripture that it is attainable — albeit only by those who “wait for Him” with utmost purity and longing. This passage teaches us the subtlety of the sacred language, the power of prayer, and the hidden treasures reserved for those who truly cling to the Torah and Hashem.

Happy is the portion of the righteous — in this World and in the World to Come. About them it is written: “וְיִשְׂמְחוּ כָל חוֹסֵי בָךְ לְעוֹלָם יְרַנֵּנוּ וְתָסֵךְ עָלֵימוֹ וְיַעְלְצוּ בְךָ אֹהֲבֵי שְׁמֶךָ” “And let all who take refuge in You rejoice, let them ever shout for joy; You shelter them, and those who love Your Name will exult in You.” (Psalms 5:12)
And it is also written: “אַךְ צַדִּיקִים יוֹדוּ לִשְׁמֶךָ יֵשְׁבוּ יְשָׁרִים אֶת פָּנֶיךָ” “But the righteous shall give thanks to Your Name; the upright shall dwell in Your presence.” (Psalms 140:14)
And also: “וְיִבְטְחוּ בְךָ יוֹדְעֵי שְׁמֶךָ כִּי לֹא עָזַבְתָּ דֹּרְשֶׁיךָ ה’” “And those who know Your Name will trust in You, for You have not forsaken those who seek You, Hashem.” (Psalms 9:11)
בָּרוּךְ יְיָ לְעוֹלָם אָמֵן וְאָמֵן
יִמְלֹךְ יְיָ לְעוֹלָם אָמֵן וְאָמֵן
Blessed is Hashem forever, Amen and Amen.
Hashem shall reign forever, Amen and Amen.
