Daily Zohar 4557

Come and see, all the years that Aaron was present, Israel was under the shade of faith צֵל הָאֱמוּנָה, beneath those seven clouds. After Aaron’s death, one cloud was withdrawn: the Chessed of the clouds, his attribute, the rightmost of all. This means that all aspects of Chessed included on the right side, but the Chessed level among them was more rightward than all because all were included in it, and they are the aspect of the secret of the seven Sefirot included in the Sefirah of Chessed. Therefore, when the Chessed of the clouds was withdrawn, all the other clouds were also withdrawn with it, being the six Sefirot included in it, and Israel saw the lack of protection as it is written;
Numbers 20:29
“Now when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, all the house of Israel mourned for Aaron thirty days.”
The people saw that the shade of the clouds had gone away from them, and they saw the clouds. Immediately,
Exodus 21:1
“The king of Arad, the Canaanite, who dwelt in the South, heard that Israel was coming on the road to Atharim. Then he fought against Israel and took some of them prisoners.”
He heard that the Clouds of Glory were withdrawn, and the great guide had died since all these clouds were tied to him.

Rabbi Yitzchak said, Indeed, “the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who lived in the Negev,” heard. When those spies Moses sent came, they said, “Amalek dwells in the land of the Negev,” to break their spirit, for it was through Amalek that their strength was first shattered.

Rabbi Abba asked, what is the relevance of the Canaanite here after the clouds had withdrawn? And he responds, “Rather, it is written about Canaan,
Genesis 9:25
“Then he said: “Cursed be Canaan; A servant of servants He shall be to his brethren.”
We learn here, from the text ‘And when the Canaanite heard,’ that one who removes himself from the shade of faith is fit to be enslaved, to the servants of servants, that is, to the Canaanites.” As it says, “and fought against Israel and took some of them captive,” meaning he enslaved people from among Israel.
