We learned that it is written,
Leviticus 16:16
“וְכִפֶּר עַל הַקֹּדֶשׁ מִטֻּמְאֹת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וּמִפִּשְׁעֵיהֶם לְכָל חַטֹּאתָם וְכֵן יַעֲשֶׂה לְאֹהֶל מוֹעֵד הַשֹּׁכֵן אִתָּם בְּתוֹךְ טֻמְאֹתָם.”
“And he shall make an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness.”
The question is asked, what does “And he shall atone for the Holy” mean? Rabbi Elazar said: We have learned that the wicked cause a blemish above, stirring up judgments and causing the Holy Temple to become impure, and the mighty Snake begins to manifest. Then, judgments are aroused in the world. On this day, the priest must purify everything and crown the holy sefira, which is the Chessed of Zeir Anpin, which is the head of the King, as Chessed is His first sefira. This is so that the King may come to dwell with the Queen, who is Malchut. When the head of the King moves, all His sefirot move as well, and He comes to unite with the Queen to bring joy and blessings to the world.
Notes:
On Yom Kippur, the High Priest’s role is not merely ceremonial. He must purify the spiritual realms, particularly the sefira of Chessed within Zeir Anpin, which is considered the “head” or the first of the king’s attributes. This purification is necessary to prepare for the union between the King (Zeir Anpin) and the Queen (Malchut), symbolizing the harmony between the higher and lower levels.
When the King, represented by Zeir Anpin, moves towards this union, all attributes align and follow, leading to a powerful spiritual union that brings joy and blessings to the world. This union is essential for restoring balance and ensuring that the King’s presence can dwell within the lower levels, bringing peace and harmony to creation.
This explanation highlights the interconnectedness between human actions and the divine order, emphasizing the importance of spiritual purification and alignment, especially on such a significant day as Yom Kippur. The High Priest’s service is thus seen as a critical act of restoring harmony on all levels, above and below.
