205. רַבִּי יִצְחָק אָמַר, אָמְרוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל לִפְנֵי הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא: בְּעוֹד שֶׁנַּפְשִׁי בִּי, אִוִּיתִךָ בַּלַּיְלָה. מָה הַטַּעַם בַּלַּיְלָה? אֶלָּא מִשּׁוּם שֶׁהַנֶּפֶשׁ הַזּוֹ בַּשָּׁעָה הַזּוֹ צְרִיכָה לַחְמֹד אוֹתְךָ. אַף רוּחִי בְקִרְבִּי אֲשַׁחֲרֶךָּ, כַּאֲשֶׁר מִתְעוֹרֶרֶת בִּי רוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ, אֲשַׁחֲרֶךָּ בְּהִתְעוֹרְרוּת לַעֲשׂוֹת רְצוֹנְךָ. כִּי כַּאֲשֶׁר מִשְׁפָּטֶיךָ לָאָרֶץ, בִּזְמַן שֶׁהַמִּשְׁפָּט יוֹרֵד לָאָרֶץ לְבַשֵּׂם אֶת הָעוֹלָם, אָז צֶדֶק לָמְדוּ יֹשְׁבֵי תֵבֵל. כְּלוֹמַר, יְכוֹלִים לִסְבֹּל אֶת הַדִּין שֶׁל צֶדֶק, וְלֹא יֻשְׁמַד הָעוֹלָם מִמֶּנּוּ. מָתַי צֶדֶק לָמְדוּ יֹשְׁבֵי תֵבֵל? כַּאֲשֶׁר מִשְׁפָּטֶיךָ לָאָרֶץ. רַבִּי חִזְקִיָּה אָמַר, נַפְשִׁי אִוִּיתִךָ בַּלַּיְלָה – זוֹ כְּנֶסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל. אַף רוּחִי בְקִרְבִּי אֲשַׁחֲרֶךָּ – זֶה הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא.
206. רַבִּי אַבָּא הָיָה יוֹשֵׁב לִפְנֵי רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן. קָם רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בַּחֲצוֹת הַלַּיְלָה לַעֲסֹק בַּתּוֹרָה. קָמוּ רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר וְרַבִּי אַבָּא עִמּוֹ. פָּתַח רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן וְאָמַר, (תהלים מב) כְּאַיָּל תַּעֲרֹג עַל אֲפִיקֵי מָיִם כֵּן נַפְשִׁי תַעֲרֹג אֵלֶיךָ אֱלֹהִים. הַפָּסוּק הַזֶּה פֵּרְשׁוּהוּ הַחֲבֵרִים, אַשְׁרֵיהֶם יִשְׂרָאֵל מִכָּל הָעַמִּים, שֶׁהַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא נָתַן לָהֶם תּוֹרָה קְדוֹשָׁה וְהוֹרִישׁ לָהֶם נְשָׁמוֹת קְדוֹשׁוֹת מִמָּקוֹם קָדוֹשׁ כְּדֵי לַעֲשׂוֹת מִצְווֹתָיו וּלְהִשְׁתַּעֲשֵׁעַ בַּתּוֹרָה. שֶׁכָּל מִי שֶׁמִּשְׁתַּעֲשֵׁעַ בַּתּוֹרָה, לֹא פוֹחֵד מִכֹּל, שֶׁכָּתוּב (תהלים קיט) לוּלֵי תוֹרָתְךָ שַׁעֲשֻׁעָי אָז אָבַדְתִּי בְעָנְיִי.

Rabbi Yitzchak said: The people of Israel said before the Holy One, blessed be He, “While my soul is within me, I long for You in the night.” What is the reason for “in the night”? It is because, at that time, the soul must desire You. “Indeed, my spirit within me seeks You diligently,” meaning, when the Holy Spirit within me awakens, I will seek You, prompted to do Your will. “For when Your Justice (מִּשְׁפָּט) come to the earth,” meaning when Justice (מִּשְׁפָּט), which is Zeir Anpin, descends to the earth, which is Malchut, to spread light in the world, then “the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness (צֶדֶק).” This means that they can endure the judgments of righteousness (צֶדֶק), and the people of the world would not be destroyed by it. When do they “learn righteousness (צֶדֶק)?” When Your Justice comes to the earth.
Rabbi Hezekiah said, “My soul longs for You in the night,” which refers to the Congregation of Israel, which is Malchut, and “Indeed, my spirit within me seeks You diligently,” which refers to the Holy One, blessed be He. For Malchut is called soul (Nefesh), and the Holy One, blessed be He, is called spirit (Ruach).

Notes:
The passage elaborates on the yearning of Malchut for Zeir Anpin during times of difficulty, symbolized by the night. The soul level of Nefesh, or Malchut, desires connection with the Holy even during times of judgment, symbolized by the Holy Spirit. The Justice coming from Zeir Anpin descending upon the earth (the world of Malchut) is seen as an opportunity for spiritual refinement and learning righteousness. This indicates that the world is purified through Justice (Zeir Anpin), and people are taught how to withstand these judgments and continue growing in righteousness.
Rabbi Hezekiah emphasizes that the relationship between Malchut and Zeir Anpin is likened to the relationship between the soul level of Nefesh and the level of Ruach, where the Nefesh constantly yearns for the Ruach (Zeir Anpin), seeking higher connection and fulfillment of Hashem’s will.

Rabbi Elazar was sitting before Rabbi Shimon. Rabbi Shimon rose at midnight to engage in the study of the Torah. Rabbi Elazar and Rabbi Abba rose with him. Rabbi Shimon opened and said: 
Psalm 42:2
“כְּאַיָּל תַּעֲרֹג עַל אֲפִיקֵי מָיִם כֵּן נַפְשִׁי תַעֲרֹג אֵלֶיךָ אֱלֹהִים.”
“As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God.”
The friends have already explained this verse. Israel is blessed among all nations, for the Holy One, blessed be He, gave them the holy Torah and endowed them with holy souls from a sacred place to fulfill His commandments and delight in the Torah. For whoever delights in Torah has no fear of anything, as it is written: 
Psalm 119:92
“לוּלֵי תוֹרָתְךָ שַׁעֲשֻׁעָי אָז אָבַדְתִּי בְעָנְיִי.”
“If Your Torah had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction.”
