#175
If the soul merits ascending further beyond this, its portion and lot are fortunate, as it attains closeness to the King’s body, meaning Zeir Anpin. Since it has merited ascending to Zion and Jerusalem, which correspond to the Nukva, the next level beyond is the “body of the King,” which is Zeir Anpin.
If the soul does not merit ascending further, it is said of it: “וְהָיָה הַנִּשְׁאָר בְּצִיּוֹן וְהַנּוֹתָר בִּירוּשָׁלַ‍ִם קָדוֹשׁ יֵאָמֶר לוֹ”—”And it shall come to pass that he who is left in Zion, and he who remains in Jerusalem, shall be called holy” (Isaiah 4:3), referring to the Nukva.
But if the soul merits ascending higher, happy is it for attaining the honor of the King—Zeir Anpin—and for delighting in the supreme Eden above, from the place called “שָׁמַיִם” “heaven,” meaning Zeir Anpin. As it is written: “אָז תִּתְעַנַּג עַל ה'”—”Then you shall delight yourself in Hashem” (Isaiah 58:14), precisely referring to Hashem, which is Zeir Anpin called YHVH. Fortunate is the portion of one who merits this grace (Chessed), as it is written: “כִּי גָדוֹל מֵעַל שָׁמַיִם חַסְדֶּךָ”—”For great is Your mercy (Chessed) above the heavens” (Psalms 108:5).
#176
He asks, “Is the Chessed (‘חסד’) above the heavens, as mentioned earlier? For it is written: ‘כִּי גָדוֹל עַד שָׁמַיִם חַסְדֶּךָ’—’For great is Your mercy (Chessed), reaching unto the heavens’ (Psalms 57:11), which implies that Chessed is below the heavens.” He answers: Rabbi Yossi said, “There is upper Chessed and lower Chessed.
Upper Chessed is the Chessed of Zeir Anpin itself, which is above the heavens. This is because the heavens refer to Tiferet, and Chessed precedes Tiferet. Thus, the verse states, ‘מַעַל שָׁמַיִם חַסְדֶּךָ’—’Your Chessed is above the heavens’ (Psalms 108:5).
Lower Chessed refers to the Chessed of Z “A as it becomes clothed in the Nukva through Netzach and Hod of Z” A. This is described as ‘חַסְדֵי דָוִד הַנֶּאֱמָנִים’—’ the faithful Chessed of David’ (Isaiah 55:3), as these are attributed to the Nukva, which is called David. About this, it is written: ‘עַד שָׁמַיִם חַסְדֶּךָ’—’ Your Chessed reaches unto the heavens,’ because they are below the heavens, which is Tiferet of Z” A.
