#172
The holy Israelites observe these days during which they entered under the wings of the Shechinah, and they guard the bread that comes from her side—namely, the matzot, as it is written: “וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם אֶת הַמַּצּוֹת”—”And you shall guard the matzot” (Exodus 12:17).
What is the meaning of “You shall guard the matzot”? It is like what is written: “וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם אֶת בְּרִיתִי”—”And you shall guard My covenant” (Genesis 17:9), which refers to the covenant of circumcision. And all of these [mitzvot] ascend and are united within one singular level.
Notes:
The mitzvah of guarding the matzot parallels the guarding of the brit milah, symbolizing the unity and sanctity of the covenants between Israel and the Holy One, Blessed be He. Both observances elevate to a single spiritual level, reinforcing their profound connection to the Shechinah.
#173
If you say, “Moshe, why did he not perform the peri’ah (uncovering) for them and instead left them with the milah (circumcision) without the peri’ah?” The answer is So that Israel would not be delayed there until they recovered. Therefore, he did not perform the peri’ah.
Regarding this, it is written: “שִׁבְעַת יָמִים תֹּאכַל עָלָיו מַצּוֹת לֶחֶם עֹנִי”—”For seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, the bread of affliction” (Deuteronomy 16:3). Why is it called the bread of affliction? Because “בְּחִפָּזוֹן יָצָאתָ”—”You left in haste” (Deuteronomy 16:3), as it is also written: “כִּי לֹא יָכְלוּ לְהִתְמַהְמָה”—”For they could not delay” (Exodus 12:39).
Thus, they were not given peri’ah, and circumcision without peri’ah results in the “bread of affliction,” as explained above.
Notes:
The lack of peri’ah during the Exodus, due to the haste of leaving Egypt, spiritually parallels the matzot as “bread of affliction.” This incomplete circumcision reflects Israel’s initial state of redemption but not full spiritual perfection.
