377. עֶרְוַת אֲחִי אָבִיךָ לֹא תְגַלֵּה, שָׁנָה רַבִּי יְהוּדָה – זֶהוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל לְמַטָּה. וַאֲחוֹת אִמְּךָ – זוֹ יְרוּשָׁלַיִם שֶׁלְּמַטָּה. בַּחֲטָאִים הַלָּלוּ יִגְלוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל לְבֵין הָעַמִּים וְתֶחֱרַב יְרוּשָׁלַיִם לְמַטָּה. וְעַל זֶה שָׁנִינוּ, אַהֲבַת הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא שֶׁקָּרָא לְיִשְׂרָאֵל אַחִים, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (תהלים קכב) לְמַעַן אַחַי וְרֵעָי אֲדַבְּרָה נָא וְגוֹ’. (וּבֵאַרְנוּ הַדְּבָרִים, וְשָׁם (דְּבָרִים שָׁם) בַּת בְּנָהּ וּבַת בִּתָּהּ. וְאַף עַל גַּב שֶׁהֵם בַּנִּגְלֶה וּבַנִּסְתָּר וְכֵן אַחֲרָיו. שֶׁהֲרֵי הָעוֹלָם צָרִיךְ לָהֶם, וְהֵם יִשּׁוּב הָעוֹלָם, כְּמוֹ שֶׁכָּתוּב (משלי כז) רֵעֲךָ וְרֵעַ אָבִיךָ) וְזֶה סוֹד הַדָּבָר. שֶׁאָמַר רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן.
378. אָמַר רַבִּי יְהוּדָה, אִם אַחַי, לָמָּה רֵעָי? וְאִם רֵעָי, לָמָּה אַחַי? אֶלָּא לָמַדְנוּ, אוֹתוֹ דָבָר שֶׁלֹּא סָר לְעוֹלָמִים נִקְרָא רֵעַ, כְּמוֹ שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר רֵעֲךָ וְרֵעַ אָבִיךָ אַל תַּעֲזֹב. וְזֶהוּ סוֹד הַדָּבָר שֶׁאָמַר רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן, הָאֵם הָעֶלְיוֹנָה נִקְרֵאת רַעְיָה, כִּי לֹא זָזָה אַהֲבַת הָאָב מִמֶּנָּה לְעוֹלָמִים. וְהָאֵם הַתַּחְתּוֹנָה נִקְרֵאת כַּלָּה, וְנִקְרֵאת אָחוֹת, כְּמוֹ שֶׁבֵּאַרְנוּ (שיר ח) אָחוֹת לָנוּ קְטַנָּה.

Rabbi Yehuda taught: This refers to Israel below — for Israel are called the brothers of Zeir Anpin, who is referred to as your father. And “the sister of your mother” refers to Jerusalem below, which is the sister of the upper Malchut, who is your mother. Due to these sins, the nakedness (disgrace) of Israel is revealed, meaning Israel will be exiled among the nations. And the nakedness of Jerusalem is revealed, meaning Jerusalem below will be destroyed.
Based on this, we have learned of the love of the Holy One, Blessed be He, for He calls Israel His brothers, as it is written:
“For the sake of my brothers and companions I will speak peace to you” (Psalms 122:8). Therefore, the verse refers to them as: “the nakedness of the brother of your father,” — as explained earlier.
Notes:
God’s love for Israel is emphasized as seen in God’s naming of Israel as “brothers,” expressing the enduring relationship and potential for restoration. This deepens the meaning of exile: not just a physical displacement but a spiritual exposure and disconnection, awaiting rectification and reunion.

Rabbi Yehuda said: If they are my brothers (אַחַי), why does it say my companions (רֵעָי)? And if they are my companions, why does it say my brothers? And he answers: Rather, we have learned: That which never becomes separated is called “my companion” (רֵעָי) — as it is written: “רֵעֲךָ וְרֵעַ אָבִיךָ אַל תַּעֲזֹב” “Your friend and the friend of your father do not forsake” (Proverbs 27:10). And this is the secret that Rabbi Shimon revealed: The upper mother, which is Binah, is called companion (רַעְיָה), because the love of the Father (Chokhmah) is never separated from her. But the lower mother, meaning Malchut, is called bride (כַּלָּה) and also called sister (אָחוֹת), as we have already explained in the verse: “אָחוֹת לָנוּ קְטַנָּה” “We have a little sister” (Song of Songs 8:8), which refers to Malchut.

“Brothers” symbolize relationships that may fluctuate — such as the connection between Israel/Malchut and Zeir Anpin.
“Companions” symbolize inseparable spiritual unity, such as the bond between Chokhmah and Binah.
