#343
Rabbi Abba was traveling to Kapotkia, and Rabbi Yossi was with him. As they were walking, they saw a man approaching with a particular mark on his face. Rabbi Abba said: “Let us turn away from this path, for the face of this man bears witness against him—that he has transgressed the forbidden sexual relations (עריות) mentioned in the Torah. And therefore, this mark has been inscribed upon his face.” Rabbi Yossi said, “If this man had this mark from the time he was a child, then what transgression of forbidden relations could have been with him already?” Rabbi Abba replied: “I see, from his face, testimony that he has indeed transgressed the forbidden relations listed in the Torah.”
Notes:
Spiritual actions leave physical and spiritual imprints on a person. Serious sins—especially violations involving sanctity and purity—can be seen by the spiritually perceptive. This teaches the importance of guarding one’s purity, for nothing is hidden in the spiritual realms, and even the body can bear witness to a person’s inner moral state.
