341. וְעַל כֵּן וְהָיָה מַחֲנֶיךָ קָדוֹשׁ, שֶׁצָּרִיךְ אָדָם שֶׁלֹּא יִטְמָא בַחֲטָאָיו וְיַעֲבֹר עַל דִּבְרֵי תוֹרָה. שֶׁאִם הוּא עוֹשֶׂה כָּךְ, מְטַמְּאִים אוֹתוֹ, כְּמוֹ שֶׁכָּתוּב וְנִטְמֵתֶם בָּם, בְּלִי א’. וְלָמַדְנוּ, מָאתַיִם אַרְבָּעִים וּשְׁמוֹנָה אֵיבָרִים בַּגּוּף, וְכֻלָּם נִטְמָאִים כְּשֶׁהוּא נִטְמָא. כְּלוֹמַר, כְּשֶׁהוּא רוֹצֶה לְהִטָּמֵא. וְעַל כֵּן וְהָיָה מַחֲנֶיךָ קָדוֹשׁ. מַה זֶּה מַחֲנֶיךָ? אֵלּוּ הֵם אֵיבְרֵי הַגּוּף. וְלֹא יִרְאֶה בְךָ עֶרְוַת דָּבָר, מַה זֶּה עֶרְוַת דָּבָר? עֶרְוָה נָכְרִיָּה שֶׁזֶּה (שֶׁהוּא) דְּבַר רֶמֶז, לַדָּבָר הַזֶּה, כְּמוֹ שֶׁבֵּאַרְנוּ. שֶׁאִם כָּךְ, וְשָׁב מֵאַחֲרֶיךָ וַדַּאי. וְעַל כֵּן עֶרְוַת אֵשֶׁת אָבִיךָ לֹא תְגַלֵּה. מָה הַטַּעַם? מִשּׁוּם שֶׁכָּתוּב עֶרְוַת אָבִיךָ הִוא, כְּמוֹ שֶׁבֵּאַרְנוּ.
342. לָמַדְנוּ, עַל שְׁלֹשָׁה דְבָרִים מִתְעַכְּבִים יִשְׂרָאֵל בַּגָּלוּת: עַל שֶׁעוֹשִׂים קָלוֹן בַּשְּׁכִינָה בַּגָּלוּת, וּמַחֲזִירִים פְּנֵיהֶם מֵהַשְּׁכִינָה, וְעַל שֶׁמְּטַמְּאִים אֶת עַצְמָם לִפְנֵי הַשְּׁכִינָה, וְאֶת כֻּלָּם בֵּאַרְנוּ בְמִשְׁנָתֵנוּ.

And therefore it is written: “וְהָיָה מַחֲנֶיךָ קָדוֹשׁ” “And your camp shall be holy.” (Deuteronomy 23:15) A person must ensure not to defile himself through his sins and not to transgress the words of the Torah. For if he does so, they defile him, as it is written: “וְנִטְמֵתֶם בָּם” “And you shall become impure through them” (Leviticus 11:43), written without an Aleph (“ונטמתם” instead of “ונטמאתם”), to hint at an even greater defilement. And we have learned: There are 248 limbs in the body, and all of them become defiled when a person defiles himself. That is, once he wills to defile himself, he immediately becomes defiled. Therefore it is written: “וְהָיָה מַחֲנֶיךָ קָדוֹשׁ” “And your camp shall be holy.” What is meant by “your camp”? It refers to the limbs of the body. And it is further written: “וְלֹא יִרְאֶה בְךָ עֶרְוַת דָּבָר” “And He shall not see in you a naked thing.” What is “nakedness of a thing (עֶרְוַת דָּבָר)”? It hints that you must not cause a foreign nakedness (עֶרְוָה נָכְרִיָּה) to cling to “this thing,” meaning to that which is connected to Malchut, who is called “Davar” (“thing, word”). For if you do cause this, then surely: “וְשָׁב מֵאַחֲרֶיךָ” “And He will turn away from you.” And therefore, it says: “עֶרְוַת אֵשֶׁת אָבִיךָ לֹא תְגַלֵּה” “The nakedness of your father’s wife you shall not uncover.” Why? Because:”It is your father’s nakedness,” as we have already established.

We have learned: Because of three things, Israel remains delayed in exile: Because they treat the Shechinah with disrespect during exile, behaving disgracefully toward the her presence. Because they turn their faces away from the Shechinah, as it is written: “כִּי פָנוּ אֵלַי עֹרֶף וְלֹא פָנִים” “For they turned to Me the back and not the face” (Jeremiah 2:27). Because they defile themselves before the Shechinah, acting without care or concern, forgetting that the Shechinah is with them in exile. All of these reasons have already been established and explained in our teachings here.
