Daily Zohar # 5048 – Shemot – The hidden depths of divine justice
Daily Zohar 5048

#168
Once, Rabbi Yossi bar Rabbi Yaakov, a man of Kfar Ono, asked Rabbi Meir when Rabbi Akiva and his companions had departed from the world, and they died in that manner, that is, they were killed by the kingdom (Romans). And he said to him: Is it written such a thing anywhere in the entire Torah, that such sufferings should befall the righteous?
Rabbi Meir said to him: Is it not written such a thing? Behold, Solomon said: “אֲשֶׁר יֵשׁ צַדִּיקִים אֲשֶׁר מַגִּיעַ אֲלֵיהֶם כְּמַעֲשֵׂה הָרְשָׁעִים”, “There are righteous men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked” (Ecclesiastes 8:14). And there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous; they sit in peace and tranquility in this world, and judgment does not come upon them, as if they had done the deeds of the righteous.
Notes:
The righteous may suffer like the wicked (כְּמַעֲשֵׂה הָרְשָׁעִים), while the wicked prosper like the righteous, revealing the hidden depths of divine justice.
#169
He asks: Why does it happen to them (wicked) like the righteous?
And he answers: Either because it is revealed before the Holy One, blessed be He, that they will repent, or that seed will come from them that will be righteous in the world. Like Terach, from whom true seed came — Abraham.
Ahaz, from whom Hezekiah came. And similarly, the other wicked in the world.
And for this reason, in this side and in that side — that is, both in the righteous and in the wicked — the vanity we mentioned is done, and it strengthens upon the earth as we said.
Notes:
Why do some wicked prosper like the righteous? It is either due to future repentance or righteous descendants (e.g., Abraham from Terach, Hezekiah from Ahaz). This “vanity” affects both sides, strengthening earthly existence until rectification.
