#177
“וְיִקְחוּ לָהֶם שֶׂה לְבֵית אָבֹת שֶׂה לַבָּיִת”, “And they shall take for themselves a lamb for a household, a lamb for a household” (Exodus 12:3).
We have learned: There are three knots: the firstborn of cattle, the firstborn of the captive, the firstborn of the maidservant. And all the other levels of the klipah are bound in these three upper aspects. And in this one called “flock” (צאן), everything is bound, and everything is included in the flock, which is the highest level of them all. And the flock below is bound to the flock above, and they cannot be separated from its knots. And it is found that in this, in the lamb (שה), everything was bound. And therefore it is written about it: “וְהָיָה לָכֶם לְמִשְׁמֶרֶת”— “And it shall be for you for a keeping” (Exodus 12:6), that is, bind it with a knot and it shall be delivered into your hand, in your possession, until you slaughter it and execute judgment upon it.
And for the time that will come, it is written: “מִי זֶה בָּא מֵאֱדוֹם”— “Who is this who comes from Edom” (Isaiah 63:1). And it is written: “כִּי זֶבַח לַיהוָה בְּבָצְרָה”— “For YHVH has a sacrifice in Botzrah” (Isaiah 34:6), that is, He will rid of all the Sitra Achra from the earth. And it is written then: “וְהָיָה יְהוָה לְמֶלֶךְ”— “And YHVH will be king” (Zechariah 14:9), etc.
Notes:
The lamb (שֶׂה) binds all klipot to the highest flock (צאן), under Israel’s control (לְמִשְׁמֶרֶת) for judgment; in the future, a sacrifice in Botzrah (זֶבַח…בְּבָצְרָה) destroys the Sitra Achra, bringing YHVH’s kingship (לְמֶלֶךְ) all over existence.
#178
This commandment is to remove leaven (chametz). For this commandment was given to Israel, as it is written: “וַיִּשָּׂא הָעָם אֶת בְּצֵקוֹ טֶרֶם יֶחְמָץ”— “And the people took their dough before it was leavened” (Exodus 12:39). And it is written: “שְׂאֹר לֹא יִמָּצֵא בְּבָתֵּיכֶם”— “Leaven shall not be found in your houses” (Exodus 12:19). And the friends have already explained it.
And we have explained the secret between chametz and matzah of the Exodus from Egypt in several places: this is the evil inclination, and this is the good inclination.
Notes:
This Zohar explains the commandment to remove chametz during Passover (שְׂאֹר לֹא יִמָּצֵא). The people took unleavened dough (טֶרֶם יֶחְמָץ), symbolizing the good inclination (matzah) versus the evil inclination (chametz). This distinction reflects spiritual purification: chametz represents the yetzer hara, and matzah the yetzer hatov.
