199. בֹּא רְאֵה, אַבְרָהָם אָמַר, הַלְּבֶן מֵאָה שָׁנָה יִוָּלֵד וְגוֹ’. אָמַר לוֹ הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא, חַיֶּיךָ, אַתָּה תִּרְאֶה כַּמָּה אוּכְלוּסִים וְכַמָּה חֲיָלוֹת שֶׁיֵּצְאוּ מִמְּךָ. בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁיָּצְאוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל מִמִּצְרַיִם, כָּל אוֹתָם שְׁבָטִים, כָּל אוֹתָם רְבָבוֹת, הֶעֱלָה הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא אֶת אַבְרָהָם וְרָאָה אוֹתָם. זֶהוּ שֶׁכָּתוּב וַיּוֹצִאֲךָ בְּפָנָיו. רַבִּי אַבָּא אָמַר, כָּל הָאָבוֹת הִזְדַּמְּנוּ לְשָׁם בְּכָל אוֹתָהּ הַגְּאֻלָּה. זֶהוּ שֶׁכָּתוּב וַיּוֹצִאֲךָ בְּפָנָיו. מַה זֶּה בְּפָנָיו? אֵלּוּ הָאָבוֹת.
200. רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר אָמַר, וַיּוֹצִאֲךָ בְּפָנָיו – זֶה יַעֲקֹב. בְּכֹחוֹ – זֶה יִצְחָק. הַגָּדֹל – זֶה אַבְרָהָם. אָמַר רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן, וְכֵן בִּשְׁבִיל הָאָבוֹת מִזְדַּמֶּנֶת תָּמִיד גְּאֻלָּה לְיִשְׂרָאֵל, שֶׁכָּתוּב (ויקרא כו) וְזָכַרְתִּי אֶת בְּרִיתִי יַעֲקוֹב וְאַף אֶת בְּרִיתִי יִצְחָק וְאַף אֶת בְּרִיתִי אַבְרָהָם אֶזְכֹּר וְהָאָרֶץ אֶזְכֹּר. הָאָבוֹת מֵילָא, אֲבָל מַה זֶּה וְהָאָרֶץ אֶזְכֹּר? אֶלָּא לְהַכְלִיל עִמָּם אֶת דָּוִד הַמֶּלֶךְ, שֶׁהוּא מֶרְכָּבָה עִם הָאָבוֹת, וְהֵם מְעוֹרְרִים תָּמִיד גְּאֻלָּה לְיִשְׂרָאֵל.

Come and see: Abraham said: “הַלְּבֶן מֵאָה שָׁנָה יִוָּלֵד”— “Shall a child be born to one who is a hundred years old?” (Genesis 17:17).
The Holy One, blessed be He, said to him: By your life, you will see how many multitudes and how many camps will come from you. At the time when Israel went out from Egypt, all these tribes and all these myriads — the Holy One, blessed be He, raised them to Abraham, and he saw them. This is what is written: “וַיּוֹצִיאֲךָ בְּפָנָיו”— “And He brought you out before Him” (Deuteronomy 4:34).
Rabbi Abba said: All the patriarchs were present there in that redemption.
This is what is written: “וַיּוֹצִיאֲךָ בְּפָנָיו”— “before Him.” What is בְּפָנָיו? These are the patriarchs.
Notes:
Abraham’s doubt about having a child at 100 is answered by God’s promise of multitudes. During the Exodus, God raised all the tribes to Abraham, allowing him to witness the redemption. Rabbi Abba explains בְּפָנָיו (“before Him”) as the presence of the patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob) at the redemption.

Rabbi Elazar said: “וַיּוֹצִיאֲךָ בְּפָנָיו”— “And He brought you out before Him” (Deuteronomy 4:34) — this is Jacob. “בְּכֹחוֹ”— “with His power” — this is Isaac.
“הַגָּדוֹל”— “the great” — this is Abraham.
Rabbi Shimon said: And likewise, for the sake of the patriarchs, redemption is always arranged for Israel. As it is written: “וְזָכַרְתִּי אֶת בְּרִיתִי יַעֲקוֹב וְאַף אֶת בְּרִיתִי יִצְחָק וְאַף אֶת בְּרִיתִי אַבְרָהָם אֶזְכֹּר וְהָאָרֶץ אֶזְכֹּר”— “And I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and also My covenant with Isaac, and also My covenant with Abraham I will remember; and the land I will remember” (Leviticus 26:42).
He asks: The patriarchs are worthy to be remembered, but what is “וְהָאָרֶץ אֶזְכֹּר”— “and the land I will remember”? And he answers: Rather, to include with them David, that is, Malchut, which is called the land. She is the chariot together with the patriarchs, who are Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet. And they always arouse redemption for Israel.
Notes:
The Exodus was through the patriarchs (בְּפָנָיו — Jacob, בְּכֹחוֹ — Isaac, הַגָּדוֹל — Abraham) and always aroused by their merit with Malchut (the land, David), ensuring redemption (וְזָכַרְתִּי).
