Daily Zohar # 5238 – Beresheet – Jacob took only what was already his own
Daily Zohar 5238

Zohar Beresheet

#439
And this matter depended upon Sam-el — that is, what he robbed of the Mochin and the blessings from Adam the first man through his cunning, by causing him to sin with the Tree of Knowledge — until another holy tree came, which is Jacob, and took back from Sam-el the blessings, so that the angel Sam-el, who is the prince of Esau, would not be blessed above, and Esau would not be blessed below. For through the destruction of Adam the first man, Sam-el and Esau were built, and through the destruction of Sam-el and Esau, holiness returns and is rebuilt. And therefore, since Sam-el with his cunning robbed the blessings from holiness, Jacob returned and took the blessings from Sam-el and Esau with cunning. And why specifically Jacob strengthened himself in this to restore the robbery that Sam-el stole from Adam the first man — he says, because Jacob resembled Adam the first man, for the beauty of Jacob was like the beauty of Adam. And therefore, just as Sam-el withheld the blessings from the first tree, which is Adam the first man, so Jacob, who is a tree resembling Adam, withheld the blessings from Sam-el above and from Esau below. And Jacob, all that he took, he took as his own — that is, what Sam-el had stolen from Adam. And therefore it is written, “And a man wrestled with him” — that is, Sam-el.
Notes:
Sam-el robbed the Mochin and blessings from Adam through the sin of the Tree of Knowledge. Jacob, who resembled Adam in beauty, restored those blessings by taking them back from Sam-el and Esau with cunning, thereby rebuilding the holiness that had been damaged.
#440
“וְהַנָּחָשׁ הָיָה עָרוּם” “And the serpent…” The serpent is the evil inclination; it is the Angel of Death. And because the serpent is the Angel of Death, therefore it caused death to the whole world — that is, it tempted Eve to sin with the Tree of Knowledge. And this is the secret of what is written, “קֵץ כָּל בָּשָׂר בָּא לְפָנַי” “The end of all flesh has come before Me” (Genesis 6:13), whose meaning is the Angel of Death, who makes an end to all flesh, for he takes the souls from all flesh, and he is called by this name — that is, he is called “the end of all flesh.”
Notes:
The serpent is identical with the evil inclination and the Angel of Death. By tempting Eve, it brought death into the world. The title “קֵץ כָּל בָּשָׂר” “end of all flesh” refers to the Angel of Death who removes the soul from every living body.
Jacob did not steal Esau’s blessing. He reclaimed the spiritual inheritance that Samael had seized from Adam, using the same quality of cunning that had been used against holiness, so that the blessings would return to their proper place and holiness could be rebuilt.
