#463
Rabbi Yitzchak said, The rule is found in the knot of the division in order to judge them and to uphold the judgment. “קוטרא” “Kutra” means a knot, and “פלגא” “palga” means division; “קפסירא” “kapsira” means rule. And he explains this verse, “And you shall rule over him” (Genesis 4:7), by saying that Malchut reveals her rule through the Angel of Death, because he punishes sinners. Rabbi Yehuda says that “And you shall rule over him” is achieved through repentance. If he does repentance, then he will rule over the evil inclination and the Angel of Death.
Notes:
Malchut exercises her rule through the Angel of Death, who carries out judgment on sinners. Rabbi Yehuda adds that through repentance a person himself can rule over the evil inclination and the Angel of Death.
#464
Rabbi Yossi said, When the generations of Cain were going in the world, they would level and smooth the earth, and they were like the angels above and like the men below. And this is because Cain was from the filth of Samael who came upon Eve, who was an angel, and also from the seed of Adam. “מטרטשי” “Metarteshei” means they level and smooth, from the language of “he struck it with a hammer and flattened it” (Bava Kamma 98a). From the great strength of the sons of Cain, they made, with their walking, the mountains and valleys of the earth into a plain.
Rabbi Yitzchak said, When Aza and Azael fell from the place of their holiness above, they saw the daughters of man and sinned with them and gave birth to sons, and these are “הַנְּפִלִים הָיוּ בָאָרֶץ” “the Nephilim were in the earth” (Genesis 6:4).
Notes:
The descendants of Cain had both angelic and human strength, so they could level mountains as they walked. Aza and Azael, who fell from holiness, sinned with the daughters of man and produced the Nephilim.
