Rabbi Yissa asked about what is written: “זֶה סֵפֶר תּוֹלְדֹת אָדָם” “This is the book of the generations of Adam” (Genesis 5:1). Rabbi Abba said to him, It is an upper secret. We have learned that three books are opened on Rosh Hashanah, that is in the Nukva: one is of the completely righteous, and one of the completely wicked, and one of the intermediate. And he explains before us only that of the completely righteous.
There is an upper book in the Nukva, which is Binah, from whom everything goes out, and from whom the aspect of writing also goes out. There is a middle book in the Nukva that includes above and below; that is Zeir Anpin, who includes Binah and Malchut together and is called the Written Torah, and he is the first Adam of the four aspects of Adam in Atzilut -Beriah -Yetzirah -Asiyah, that is the Adam of Atzilut. There is a third book in the Nukva that is called the generations of Adam; that is, the offspring of Zeir Anpin, who is called Adam as above, and this is the book of the complete Tzadikim. And this is what it says, “This is the book of the generations of Adam,” for “this” is certainly a righteous one, that is, Yessod of Zeir Anpin, who makes generations.
The meaning: The three books are three aspects of Mochin — head, middle, and end (ראש תוך סוף) — that Zeir Anpin pours to the Nukva. They are: Mochin from Binah are the upper book; Mochin of himself are the middle book; Mochin from the aspect of his Yessod is the third book. And it is called the book of generations, for from Yessod the generations go out, and not from another sefirah. And it is also called the book of the righteous, for Yesod is called Righteous (Tzadik).
“On the day that God created Adam…” (Genesis 5:1), for certainly then, after the book of the generations of Adam was revealed, everything was corrected above and below, and both were established in one order. That is, the order of establishment — that is, the going out of the Mochin — of the lower world, which are Adam and Eve, is equal to the order of establishment of the upper world, which are Zeir Anpin and Nukva. The verse “זָכָר וּנְקֵבָה בְּרָאָם” “male and female He created them” (Genesis 5:2) is a general language, for it should have said, “man and woman He created them.” And this is because one was included in the other; that is, the female was included in the male at the time of their creation, for they were two faces, and afterward they were sawed apart, as above.
Notes:
The three books opened on Rosh Hashanah in the Nukva are three levels of Mochin that Zeir Anpin gives her: from Binah, from Zeir Anpin himself, and from Yessod. The “book of the generations of Adam” is Yessod, who produces offspring and is called Righteous. When this book was revealed, the lower Adam and Eve were established in the same order as Zeir Anpin and Nukva above, first as two faces and afterward separated.
