#168
Rabbi Yochanan told Rabbi Eliezer: “I see within you the primordial Light that shone during the days of Creation, which was later hidden for the Tzadikim in the world to come. It travels in ten paths, and through ten, it journeys. In the secret of the ten, it governs all, and through ten signs, it performs its actions. And we have learned: Ten inscriptions, ten keys of the House of Healing are in its hands, and ten inscriptions are taken in the Garden of Eden to prepare the earth for the bodies of the Tzadikim.
The number ten implies the Light of Chassadim, and the primordial Light is theLight of Chokmah that was concealed on the day of Creation for the Tzadikim in the future.

Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai said to Rabbi Eliezer, “Eliezer, my son, you would have seen more than a holy angel. “The Light of the soul surpasses the Light of the angels. Since Rabbi Eliezer explained the secret of the ten only in relation to the three upper sefirot (Chokmah, Binah, and Da’at), Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai elaborated further by explaining the secret of the ten in the context of the seven lower sefirot.
He said: “The world was created through ten,” referring to the sefirot, specifically Malchut, which is referred to as “the world.”
“It is governed by ten,” referring to Yessod, who governs Malchut and this world.
“The holy throne is in ten,” referring to Netzach and Hod, which are called the “lower throne.”
“The Torah is in ten,” referring to Tiferet, which aspect of the Torah.
“Its journeys are in ten,” referring to Gevurah, representing the discipline and strength in divine governance.
“The upper worlds are in ten,” referring to Chessed, the first of the seven lower sefirot that sustains the higher worlds.
“And there is one above them all, Blessed be He,” referring to Keter, from which everything emanates—both the Light of Chasadim hinted at by the secret of the ten and the Light of Chochmah.

Notes:
The ten sefirot are the foundation of Creation and its governance. It connects each sefira to a specific role in sustaining existence, showing how everything flows from Keter.

Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai said: “Let me explain something to you about this matter, with the understanding of the sages of the Mishnah. It is written, “וַיִּקַּח הָעֶבֶד עֲשָׂרָה גְמַלִּים מִגְּמַלֵּי אֲדֹנָיו וַיֵּלֶךְ” ‘The servant took ten camels…’ (Genesis 24:10).” Rabbi Eliezer responded: “My teacher, I already understand this verse; there is no need to explain it to me. However, I do not understand the meaning of ‘וְכָל טוּב אֲדֹנָיו בְּיָדוֹ’ ‘and all the goods of his master were in his hand’? for how could Abraham’s possessions be carried in his hand?”
Rabbi Yochanan replied: “This refers to the name of his Master—that is, the Shechinah, which is called ‘שם’ ‘Name.’ The Shechinah accompanied him to bring him to the desired place and protect him so that no harm would come.”
Rabbi Eliezer exclaimed: “Indeed, this is the secret of the verse, ‘כִּי שְׁמִי בְּקִרְבּוֹ’ ‘For My name is within him’ (Exodus 23:21).

Notes:
The Zohar transforms a simple verse into a profound teaching about the role of the Shechinah in guiding and protecting those who serve Hashem. The “goods of his master” are understood as the Holy Name, emphasizing that spiritual protection and guidance are the ultimate treasures.
This teaching encourages us to recognize the presence of the Shechinah in our lives, particularly when we engage in meaningful and righteous pursuits. It reminds us that Hashem’s assistance is always available, providing both guidance and protection to ensure the fulfillment of our spiritual missions.
