#136
“וְיִתֶּן לְךָ הָאֱלֹהִים” “And may He give you…” (Genesis 27:28). Rabbi Abba said: “This verse has already been explained.” But come and see: “שִׁיר הַמַּעֲלוֹת אֶל ה'” “A Song of Ascents…” (Psalms 120:1). How many songs and praises did King David compose before the Holy One, blessed be He? All were to rectify his level, which is the secret of the Nukva, and to establish a name for her—that is, to draw down Mochin for her, as it is written: “וַיַּעַשׂ דָּוִד שֵׁם” “And David made a name for her” (2 Samuel 8:13).
He composed this particular song upon seeing Jacob’s actions. This means that when David saw that Jacob was answered and received the blessings, he said this song: “בַּצָּרָתָה לִּי קָרָאתִי וַיַּעֲנֵנִי” “In my distress, I called to YHVH, and He answered me” (Psalms 120:1). For had Jacob not received the blessings, which are the secret of the complete Mochin needed for building the Nukva, David would not have been able to make a name for her.

Rabbi Elazar said: Jacob recited this song at the moment his father said to him, ‘גְּשָׁה נָא וַאֲמֻשְׁךָ בְּנִי’ ‘Please come closer so I may feel you, my son…’ (Genesis 27:21). At that time, Jacob was in great distress, fearing that his father would recognize him and uncover the deception. What is written? “וְלֹא הִכִּירוֹ” “But he did not recognize him…” (Genesis 27:23). At that moment, Jacob said to Hashem: “אֶל ה’ בַּצָּרָתָה לִּי קָרָאתִי וַיַּעֲנֵנִי” “In my distress, I called to YHVH, and He answered me” (Psalms 120:1).
#138
“ה’ הַצִּילָה נַפְשִׁי מִשְּׂפַת שֶׁקֶר מִלָּשׁוֹן רְמִיָּה” “O YHVH, save my soul from lying lips and from a deceitful tongue…” (Psalms 120:2). This refers to the level associated with Esau, symbolizing the Snake, which represents the deceitful tongue. What is the deceitful tongue at this level? It is the Snake’s actions during the sin of the Tree of Knowledge. With cunning and deceit, the Snake brought about the curses that befell the world, leading to its defilement.
Notes:
This teaching connects Esau to the Snake, both of which symbolize the destructive power of deceit and falsehood. It underscores the importance of guarding against these negative influences and striving for alignment with divine truth.
By praying, as in “save my soul from lying lips,” we acknowledge the need for Hashem’s assistance in overcoming external and internal deceit to reconnect with truth and righteousness.
Aligning ourselves with honesty and truth helps rectify the spiritual damage caused by deceit and furthers our role in correcting the world, just as Jacob’s actions counterbalance Esau’s deceitful legacy.
