Daily Zohar # 4909 – Beresheet – The sin that destroyed two eyes
Daily Zohar 4909

It is indeed certain that they are the “pure marble stones” from which pure waters emerge. They are hinted at by the two Yuds (י) in the form of the Alef (א) — one Yud at the head and one at the foot. The Vav (ו) in the middle of the Alef, slanted between the two Yuds, is the Tree of Life, of which it is said, “וָחַי לְעוֹלָם” “Whoever eats from it shall live forever.” These two Yuds are alluded to in the verse “Vayitzer” (וַיִּיצֶר) — “And He formed” — which is written with two Yuds, indicating two formations: the formation of the Upper Worlds and the formation of the Lower Worlds. They are the two Yuds found at the beginning and end of the Name “YHVH ADNY” (יאהדונה” י) — Symbolizing Chochmah (Wisdom) at the head of the Name and Chochmah at the end of the Name. They are called “Secrets of Wisdom” (תעלומות חכמה) because they are concealed within Supernal Wisdom, under the Supreme Crown (כֶּתֶר עֶלְיוֹן).

And they (the two Yuds) correspond to the two eyes, from which descend two tears into the Great Sea. For Chochmah (Wisdom) is called “eyes”, the right eye corresponds to Supernal Chochmah. The left eye corresponds to Lower Chochmah. Why did the tears fall? Because from these two Tablets, Moses brought down the Torah to Israel —The right Tablet represents Binah, the left Tablet represents Malchut. These are like the two eyes. But Israel was not worthy of them, because they broke and fell — meaning, due to the sin of the Golden Calf, as it says, “וַיְשַׁבֵּר אֹתָם תַּחַת הָהָר” “And he broke them at the foot of the mountain” (Exodus 32:19). This breaking caused the destruction of the First and Second Temples, for both derived from the two Tablets: The First Temple from the right Tablet — Supernal Chochmah (Binah), the Second Temple from the left Tablet — Lower Chochmah (Malchut). Thus, the damage from the breaking of the Tablets led to both destructions. That is why two tears fell into the Great Sea — they symbolize the two destructions caused by the breaking of the first Tablets.
Why did the Tablets break? Because the Vav (ו) fled from them — the Vav of “Vayitzer” (וַיִּיצֶר).
Explanation (Hasulam): The two Yuds in “Vayitzer” correspond to the two Yuds of the Alef (א), which are the two Tablets. The Vav, slanted between them, represents the Tree of Life, as explained earlier. At first, when Israel corrected the sin of the Tree of Knowledge and the impurity of the Snake ceased, they merited the Tablets (the two Yuds) and the Tree of Life (the Vav) between them, which granted freedom from the Angel of Death. But because of the sin of the Golden Calf, they ruined this correction — the Tree of Life (Vav) departed, the blemish of the Tree of Knowledge returned, and the Angel of Death resumed dominion. Thus, the Tablets — integrated with the Tree of Life — broke and fell. God then gave them another set of Tablets, from the side of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, from which the Torah was given through the path of “forbidden and permitted” (אִסּוּר וְהֶתֵּר) —From the right: Life, From the left: Death. As the Sages said (Shabbat 88b): “ למיימינין בה סמא דחיי, למשמאילים בה סמא דמותא” “For those who go to the right of it — a potion of life; for those who go to the left — a potion of death.”
Notes:
The breaking of the first Tablets was not just a historical event — it signified the loss of the ultimate spiritual connection between Hashem and Israel. The Tree of Life — symbolized by the Vav — was lost due to sin, leading to the dominion of the Angel of Death and the subsequent destruction of the First and Second Temples.
The Torah given afterward carried a dual nature — life or death — dependent on how it is approached. This teaches that the purity of connection with the divine depends on inner spiritual readiness, and that the Torah is a source of life only when approached with pure intent.
