Zohar Vayikra
Continued from previous DZ
#224
And whoever merited to guard this brit properly, and did not sin in it all his days — he becomes a merkavah (chariot) for Yessod, and he is grasped in day and night — which are Zeir Anpin and Nukva — like Yessod itself. And he merits two worlds: this world and the world to come.
And therefore Avraham is called “whole” (שָׁלֵם, shalem), as it is written: “הִתְהַלֵּךְ לְפָנַי וֶהְיֵה תָמִים” “Walk before Me and be whole/tamim” (Genesis 17:1). And when is he called tamim — whose meaning is shalem (שָׁלֵם, whole/complete)? When he merited both day and night. As it is written: “יוֹמָם יְצַוֶּה יְהוָה חַסְדּוֹ וּבַלַּיְלָה שִׁירָה עִמִּי” “By day YHVH commands His Chessed, and at night His song is with me” (Psalms 42:9). And Avraham inherited both of them. But Chessed was not fulfilled in him in complete establishment until he was circumcised. Once he was circumcised, Chessed was fulfilled in him, and he merited both and was called “שָׁלֵם” (shalem, whole).
Notes:
The perfect guarding of the brit milah transforms a person into a merkavah for Yessod, uniting him continuously with Zeir Anpin (day/Chessed) and Malchut (night/din sweetened by mercy), granting merit in both this world and the world to come. Avraham exemplifies this: he inherited “day” (Chessed) and “night” (שִׁירָה, song/mercy at night), but only after circumcision (“הִתְהַלֵּךְ לְפָנַי וֶהְיֵה תָמִים,” Genesis 17:1) did Chessed fully establish in him, making him truly “tamim/shalem” (whole). The brit thus completes the balance between Chassadim and Gevurah, enabling the full divine inheritance and wholeness in both worlds.
