387. אַחַר שֶׁמֵּת מֹשֶׁה, מַה כָּתוּב? וְקָם הָעָם הַזֶּה וְזָנָה וְגוֹ’. כָּךְ, אוֹי לָעוֹלָם כְּשֶׁיִּסְתַּלֵּק מִמֶּנּוּ רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן, שֶׁמַּעַיְנוֹת הַחָכְמָה יִסְתַּתְּמוּ מִן הָעוֹלָם, וְיִרְצֶה אָדָם דְּבַר חָכְמָה וְלֹא יִמָּצֵא מִי שֶׁיֹּאמַר, וְכָל הָעוֹלָם טוֹעִים בַּתּוֹרָה, מִשּׁוּם שֶׁלֹּא יִמָּצֵא בֵינֵיהֶם מִי שֶׁמִּתְעוֹרֵר בְּחָכְמָה. עַל אוֹתוֹ זְמַן כָּתוּב, וְאִם כָּל עֲדַת יִשְׂרָאֵל יִשְׁגּוּ. וְאִם יִשְׁגּוּ בַתּוֹרָה וְלֹא יֵדְעוּ אֶת דְּרָכֶיהָ, בַּמֶּה זֶה? מִשּׁוּם שֶׁנֶּעְלַם דָּבָר מֵעֵינֵי הַקָּהָל, שֶׁלֹּא יִמָּצֵא מִן שֶׁיּוֹדֵעַ לְגַלּוֹת עֲמֻקּוֹת הַתּוֹרָה וּדְרָכֶיהָ. אוֹי לְאוֹתָם הַדּוֹרוֹת שֶׁיִּמָּצְאוּ אָז בָּעוֹלָם.
388. אָמַר רַבִּי יְהוּדָה, עָתִיד הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא לְגַלּוֹת רָזִים עֲמֻקִּים שֶׁל הַתּוֹרָה בִּזְמַן שֶׁיָּבֹא מֶלֶךְ הַמָּשִׁיחַ, מִשּׁוּם (ישעיה יא) שֶׁמָּלְאָה הָאָרֶץ דֵּעָה אֶת ה’ כַּמַּיִם לַיָּם מְכַסִּים. וְכָתוּב (ירמיה לא) וְלֹא יְלַמְּדוּ עוֹד אִישׁ אֶת רֵעֵהוּ וְאִישׁ אֶת אָחִיו לֵאמֹר דְּעוּ אֶת ה’ כִּי כוּלָּם יֵדְעוּ אוֹתִי לְמִקְּטַנָּם וְעַד גְּדוֹלָם, אָמֵן כֵּן יְהִי רָצוֹן.

After Moses died, what is written? “וְקָם הָעָם הַזֶּה וְזָנָה” “and this people will rise up and go astray [after the foreign gods…]” (Deuteronomy 31:16). So, woe to the world when Rabbi Shimon departs from it, for the springs of wisdom will be stopped up in the world, and a person will seek a matter of wisdom and not find one who will tell it, and the whole world will err in Torah and not find one who will arouse it with wisdom. Concerning that time it is written, “וְאִם כָּל־עֲדַת יִשְׂרָאֵל יִשְׁגּוּ” “And if the whole congregation of Israel shall err” (Leviticus 4:13). That is, if they err in Torah, that they do not know its ways, what they are, because “וְנֶעְלַם דָּבָר מֵעֵינֵי הַקָּהָל” “and a matter is hidden from the eyes of the congregation” ((Leviticus 4:13)), that there will not be found one who knows to reveal the depths of Torah and its ways. Woe to those generations that will be found in the world then.
Notes:
The Zohar laments the profound loss when a great luminary like Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai departs, sealing the wellsprings of wisdom. In such times, the world strays from Torah because no one remains to uncover its hidden depths, mirroring the communal error that occurs when guidance is concealed.

Rabbi Yehuda said, The Holy One, blessed be He, is destined to reveal deep secrets in Torah in the time of King Mashiach, because “כִּי מָלְאָה הָאָרֶץ דֵּעָה אֶת־יְהוָה כַּמַּיִם לַיָּם מְכַסִּים” “for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of YHVH, as the waters cover the sea”(Isaiah 11:9). And it is written, “וְלֹא יְלַמְּדוּ עוֹד אִישׁ אֶת־רֵעֵהוּ וְאִישׁ אֶת־אָחִיו לֵאמֹר דְּעוּ אֶת־יְהוָה כִּי כֻלָּם יֵדְעוּ אוֹתִי לְמִקְּטַנָּם וְעַד־גְּדוֹלָם” “And they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying: ‘Know YHVH’; for they shall all know Me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them”(Jeremia 31:33), amen, so may it be His will.
Notes:
Rabbi Yehuda foretells the time of Mashiach when the Holy One, blessed be He, will unveil Torah’s profound secrets. Universal knowledge of YHVH will fill the earth, eliminating the need for teaching, as all—from small to great—will directly know the Divine.
