Daily Zohar # 5216 – Vayikra – Why “a goat for a sacrifice”

This commandment, one who misuses the holy things, needs to bring the principal and a fifth. This is what it says, “וְאֶת חֲמִישִׁיתוֹ יוֹסֵף עָלָיו” “and he shall add its fifth part to it” (Leviticus 5:16). The principal is the secret of the Vav of the Name YHVH, that is Zeir Anpin. Its fifth is the Heh, that is Malchut, for there are five aspects Keter-Chochmah-Binah-Tiferet-Malchut in Zeir Anpin, and Malchut is the fifth of him. And this is the horn of the Jubilee, that is, the horn which is Zeir Anpin, that receives from the Jubilee which is Binah. And this is the secret of the horn that was on the forehead of that ox which Adam the first man offered (Shabbat 28b), for this horn hints to Zeir Anpin, through which the sacrifice brings Malchut near to Zeir Anpin. And this, that is, to bring the fifth near to the principal, is the essence of all the sacrifices. For this is the secret: the principal, which is Zeir Anpin, remains for him for the World to Come, which is Binah; that is, he receives from Binah, and its fruits are in this world, which is Malchut that receives from Zeir Anpin. And this is ה ה, Heh-Heh, that is, the first ה Heh of the Name YHVH which is Binah, and the last ה Heh of the Name YHVH which is Malchut, and the Vav, which is Zeir Anpin, stands between them and receives from the first Heh, which is the secret of the principal that remains for him for the World to Come, and pours forth to the last Heh, which is the secret of the fruits in this world. (Thus far the Ra’aya Meheimna).
Notes:
The principal (קרן, keren) corresponds to Zeir Anpin (the Vav), and the added fifth corresponds to Malchut (the final Heh). Bringing the fifth near to the principal unites Malchut with Zeir Anpin, which is the inner purpose of every sacrifice. Zeir Anpin receives from Binah (the World to Come) and channels fruitfulness to Malchut (this world).

Come and see, a goat for a sacrifice — why? For Rabbi Shimon said, A goat — its name caused it, to learn from its name, which is the side of evil and a bad kind. For “עז” “ez” (goat) points to strong and harsh judgments. And if so, why do they offer it as a sacrifice? And he answers, Rather, so said Rabbi Shimon, They need to offer this one, for if a spirit of impurity passed over him or he dealt with it, his sacrifice is this goat, that is, in the same manner that he sinned.
Notes:
The goat (עז, ez) is associated with harsh judgment and the Other Side by its very name. It is brought as a sacrifice precisely when a person has been touched by impurity, so that the offering matches the nature of the sin and effects its repair.
