#423
What is written after it? “וְאֵד יַעֲלֶה מִן הָאָרֶץ” “And a mist went up from the earth” (Genesis 2:6). This is the correction of the below, of Adam, which precedes the face-to-face of Zeir Anpin and Nukva. And afterward “וְהִשְׁקָה אֶת כָּל פְּנֵי הָאֲדָמָה” “and watered the whole face of the ground” (Genesis 2:6) — that is, the face-to-face of Zeir Anpin and Nukva came forth. And Zeir Anpin watered Malchut, who is called ground. For “and a mist went up from the earth” means the desire of the female rises to the male, because the raising of Mayin Nukvin (desire from below) of the lower to the upper is considered the longing of the female for the male. For every lower and upper are aspects of male and female, and the lower is considered female in relation to its upper. And the aspect of raising Mayin Nukvin is considered longing, because it rises above only through the power of desire. And the measure of the verse is: “And a mist went up from the earth” — that Mayin Nukvin rise from the female, that is from lower Adam who is considered female in relation to Zeir Anpin and Nukva, who are his upper. And then the face-to-face of Zeir Anpin and Nukva come forth, that is “and watered the whole face of the ground,” as above.
Another explanation (Hasulam): the verse “And a mist went up…” is an explanation of the verse “for He had not caused it to rain…” — that is, what is the reason that He had not caused it to rain, which means that Zeir Anpin and Nukva were not face to face? Because the correction of “And a mist went up from the earth” had not yet occurred, which means that Adam had not yet raised Mayin Nukvin to Zeir Anpin and Nukva, and without the Mayin Nukvin of man the minds of face-to-face of Zeir Anpin and Nukva do not come forth. And therefore it is understood that from the lower earth, that is from Adam and Eve, the action of face-to-face above, in Zeir Anpin and Nukva, was awakened, as explained.
Notes:
The verse “And a mist went up from the earth” refers to the raising of Mayin Nukvin by Adam (the lower world), which is the longing of the female aspect for the male. This lower awakening must precede and cause the face-to-face coupling of Zeir Anpin and Nukva above. Only after that upper coupling is established does Zeir Anpin water Malchut (“the whole face of the ground”). The two levels remain mutually dependent: the lower Mayin Nukvin draw the upper Mochin, while the upper Mochin enable the full rectification below.

#424
Smoke rises first from the earth, and the cloud is awakened, and afterward everything joins one with the other. The meaning is: he gives a comparison to what was said above in the secret of the raising of Mayin Nukvin, from what is customary in this world with the descent of rains. First vapors and smoke rise from the earth from below to above, and from them clouds are awakened above and bring down the rains from above to below. And in this manner, the smoke of the sacrifice that is burned on the altar — the smoke is awakened and rises in the aspect of raising Mayin Nukvin from below to above into Zeir Anpin and Nukva, and makes completeness above, that is, the MOchin of face-to-face come forth in them, which are the completeness of Zeir Anpin and Nukva. And everything joins one with the other, that is, the Mochin of face-to-face come forth, and they couple face to face, both above and below. And in this manner it is above, that is, in the upper ones themselves: the awakening always begins from the lower to the upper. And afterward everything is completed. That is, above as well, every lower level raises Mayin Nukvin to the upper one next to it, and likewise the upper one to the one above it — all of them raise Mayin Nukvin first until the highest of them all. And then the abundance is poured from the Endless, blessed be He, from above to below, and they descend from level to level from every upper one to its lower one until they come below. In such a way that from the aspect of Mayin Nukvin every lower one is found earlier than its upper one. And from the aspect of Mayin Duchrin (Male waters), that is the Mochin that are poured from above, every upper one is found earlier than its lower one. And if the Congregation of Israel, that is the Nukva, had not begun with the awakening, that which is above her, that is Zeir Anpin, would not have been awakened opposite her. And with the desire that is below, the above is completed. The meaning: in this he gives the reason for the obligation of raising Mayin Nukvin for the Mochin.
For this can be understood from the Nukva with Zeir Anpin. Zeir Anpin is the secret of covered Chassadim(חסדים מכוסים) and never awakens toward Chochmah, like Binah, as is known. But the Nukva needs the illumination of Chochmah. And it is found that as long as the Nukva does not raise Mayin Nukvin to Zeir Anpin, Zeir Anpin does not need to draw Mochin from Arich Anpin. Only after the raising of Mayin Nukvin of the Nukva does he draw the Mochin of the illumination of Chochmah from Arich Anpin for her sake, and they attain the Mochin of face-to-face. And this reason is sufficient for all the levels of Atzilut, because all of them are in the aspect of Chassadim, and only the Nukva alone needs the illumination of Chochmah. And afterward, for the birth of Zeir Anpin and Nukva, Zeir Anpin and Nukva rise to the level of Abba and Imma (chochmah and binah), and the Nukva becomes like Imma, that is, in covered Chassadim. And now only lower Eve needs the illumination of Chochmah in place of the Nukva of Zeir Anpin, who needed the illumination of Chochmah. And therefore the mochin of Adam now depend on Eve (as above in section 421), for she is the one who awakens her upper one, which is Adam, so that he will raise Mayin Nukvin to Zeir Anpin and Nukva for the drawing of the illumination of Chochmah. Likewise, Zeir Anpin and Nukva to those above them, and so on, until the abundance is drawn from the Endless, blessed be He.
Notes:
The rising of smoke and vapor from the earth before the rain descends serves as the model for the raising of Mayin Nukvin. Every lower level must first awaken desire and raise Mayin Nukvin to the level above it; only then does the flow of Mayin Duchrin (male waters / mochin) descend from the Endless. Zeir Anpin, whose nature is covered Chassadim, does not awaken toward Chochmah on his own. Only when the Nukva raises Mayin Nukvin does he draw the illumination of Chochmah for her sake, enabling the face-to-face coupling. The same pattern continues downward: after Zeir Anpin and Nukva rise to the level of Abba and Imma, it is lower Eve who must awaken the process so that the illumination of Chochmah can reach the world of Adam.
