God ‘met’ with Balaam twice when Balaam wanted to cast spells on Israel, as it is written, “and thus (כה) you shall speak.” And now, since Balaam saw that his spells were useless, he withdrew and removed himself from his witchcraft; he awakened to praise Israel. Rabbi Yehuda asks what the awakening is here. He answered it is the awakening of one spirit from the Left side, the one under which these sorceries are bound.

Rabbi Elazar said I learned that the Holy Spirit was not upon Balaam even on that third time. Rabbi Yossi said to him, but it is written;
Numbers 24:2
“וַיִּשָּׂא בִלְעָם אֶת עֵינָיו וַיַּרְא אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל שֹׁכֵן לִשְׁבָטָיו וַתְּהִי עָלָיו רוּחַ אֱלֹהִים.”
“And Balaam raised his eyes, and saw Israel encamped according to their tribes, and the Spirit of God came upon him.”
The other times, it wasn’t the same. It was written, “He who has a generous eye will be blessed,” meaning “who has a generous eye can bless.”
Balaam had an evil eye like no other evil eye in the world; every place he looked at would be cursed by his eyes.

And that’s why they said anyone who takes his child to the market and is afraid of the evil eye should cover his head with a cloth so that the evil eye cannot control him. Also, since Balaam saw that he could not use his sorceries and spells to harm Israel, he wanted to look at them with the evil eye. Because everywhere he looked at, with his evil eyes, was cursed.
What was Balaam’s wish against Israel? It is written, “וישת אל המדבר פניו” “he set his face toward the wilderness.” Balaam turned to the golden calf that Israel served in the desert to have support from that side and cause harm to Israel.

Lesson;
The best protection from the evil eye is to avoid it. The Zohar suggests covering the head, meaning to hide. Most important is not to look into other people’s eyes. The eyes are the highest level sense and connect to the level of Chokmah. Whatever the eyes see affects the soul and body. This advice is not just for personal contact but also related to all kinds of exposures. We keep our ‘blessings’ hidden from others. We do not brag about success, new fashion, or jewelry we just bought. Such exposure could only attract jealousy and the evil eye.
The evil eye is a plague because there is too much exposure to peoples’ private life on social media, like Facebook, Tik Tok, etc. We share on social media only things that could help others. Only in small family groups can we share family-related messages, not in public. Social media systems are run by the evil side. They were made to gather information about us and use it against us. We see how this control of evil affects and infects our lives, including how governments conduct their relations with their citizens.
To have a simple and healthy life in all aspects, ‘keep your head under covers.’ Sharing private ‘stories’ means exposure to the plague.
