Hebrew translation:

139. בֹּא רְאֵה כַּמָּה גָרַם לִרְאוּבֵן מִשּׁוּם שֶׁהוּא הִשְׁתַּדֵּל לְהַחֲיוֹת אֶת יוֹסֵף. מַה כָּתוּב? (דברים לג) יְחִי רְאוּבֵן וְאַל יָמֹת וְגוֹ’. שֶׁהֲרֵי מִשּׁוּם זֶה, אַף עַל גַּב שֶׁיָּדַע שֶׁנִּלְקְחָה בְכוֹרָתוֹ מִמֶּנּוּ וְנִתְּנָה לְיוֹסֵף, הִשְׁתַּדֵּל לְהַחֲיוֹת אוֹתוֹ, וְהִתְפַּלֵּל מֹשֶׁה וְאָמַר יְחִי רְאוּבֵן וְאַל יָמֹת, וְהִתְקַיֵּם בָּעוֹלָם הַזֶּה וּבָעוֹלָם הַבָּא. מָה הַטַּעַם? מִשּׁוּם זֶה, וּמִשּׁוּם שֶׁעָשָׂה תְשׁוּבָה מֵהַמַּעֲשֶׂה הַהוּא. שֶׁכָּל מִי שֶׁעוֹשֶׂה תְשׁוּבָה, הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא מְקַיֵּם אוֹתוֹ בָּעוֹלָם הַזֶּה וּבָעוֹלָם הַבָּא.
140. בֹּא רְאֵה מַה כָּתוּב? וַיִּקְחוּ אֶת כְּתֹנֶת יוֹסֵף וְגוֹ’. הֲרֵי בֵּאֲרוּהוּ, שֶׁמִּשּׁוּם שֶׁדַּם הַשָּׂעִיר דּוֹמֶה לְדָם שֶׁל אָדָם. אֲבָל בֹּא רְאֵה, אַף עַל גַּב שֶׁהַדָּבָר בָּא כָּרָאוּי, הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא מְדַקְדֵּק עִם הַצַּדִּיקִים אֲפִלּוּ כְּחוּט הַשַּׂעֲרָה.
141. יַעֲקֹב עָשָׂה מַעֲשֶׂה כָּרָאוּי, בַּמֶּה? מִשּׁוּם שֶׁהִקְרִיב לְאָבִיו שָׂעִיר, שֶׁהוּא צַד הַדִּין הַקָּשֶׁה, וְעִם כָּל זֶה, מִשּׁוּם שֶׁהוּא הִקְרִיב שָׂעִיר וְהִכְחִישׁ אֶת אָבִיו שֶׁהוּא הַצַּד שֶׁלּוֹ, נֶעֱנַשׁ בַּשָּׂעִיר הָאַחֵר הַזֶּה שֶׁהִקְרִיבוּ לוֹ בָּנָיו אֶת הַדָּם שֶׁלּוֹ.

Reuven made big efforts to save the life of Joseph. Even though he knew that the birthright was taken from him and given to Joseph, he tried to save his life. Moses blessed him for his efforts saying;
Deuteronomy 33:6
“יְחִי רְאוּבֵן וְאַל יָמֹת וִיהִי מְתָיו מִסְפָּר.”
“Let Reuben live, and not die, Nor let his men be few.”
This blessing gave Reuben life in this world and in the world to come. In addition to saving Joseph’s life, Reuben repented for the act of changing his father’s bed (Genesis 35:22).
Anyone who repents, the Holy One, Blessed be He, gives him life in this world and in the next.

Genesis 37:31
“וַיִּקְחוּ אֶת כְּתֹנֶת יוֹסֵף וַיִּשְׁחֲטוּ שְׂעִיר עִזִּים וַיִּטְבְּלוּ אֶת הַכֻּתֹּנֶת בַּדָּם.”
“So they took Joseph’s tunic, killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the tunic in the blood.”
The blood of the goat is similar to human blood.
Even though Jacob did not sin when he brought a kid of a goat to his father, the Holy One, Blessed be He, is strict with the righteous, even with little things.

Jacob acted appropriately when he offered his father a goat; that is the aspect of harsh judgment. His offering weakened his father’s side of judgment, and therefore the aspect of judgment got a hold in Jacob. Because of that, he was punished with another goat that his sons slaughtered to show the blood of Joseph.
