Rabbi Abba said, ​On Rosh Hashanah, Adam was created, and he stood on trial before his master for eating from the Tree of Knowledge. He repented, and the Holy One, Blessed be He, accepted him. He said to him, Adam, you will be a sign to your children for generations that on this day, they stand trial, and if they do Teshuva, I will accept them, and I will arise from the throne of judgment and sit on the throne of mercy, and I will have mercy on them. King David said,
Psalm 116:1
“אָהַבְתִּי כִּי יִשְׁמַע יְהוָה אֶת קוֹלִי תַּחֲנוּנָי.”
“I love YHVH because He has heard My voice and my supplications.”
“I love that YHVH will hear my voice of supplication.”

And therefore, it is written;
Psalm 130:4
“כִּי עִמְּךָ הַסְּלִיחָה לְמַעַן תִּוָּרֵא.”
“But there is forgiveness with You, That You may be feared.”
It is also written;
Psalm 36:10
“כִּי עִמְּךָ מְקוֹר חַיִּים בְּאוֹרְךָ נִרְאֶה אוֹר.”
“For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see the light.”
The mitzvah to fast on Yom Kippur, and subdue the body and the soul is in the secret of the five restrictions of the five levels of elevation we go through on Yom Kippur. The prosecutor comes to remind their sins, as explained, and all of them in complete repentance stand before their father.

Leviticus 23:27
“אַךְ בֶּעָשׂוֹר לַחֹדֶשׁ הַשְּׁבִיעִי הַזֶּה יוֹם הַכִּפֻּרִים הוּא מִקְרָא קֹדֶשׁ יִהְיֶה לָכֶם וְעִנִּיתֶם אֶת נַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶם וְהִקְרַבְתֶּם אִשֶּׁה לַיהוָה.”
“Also the tenth day of this seventh month shall be the Day of Atonement (Yom Kipurim). It shall be a holy convocation for you; you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire to YHVH.”
Psalm 32:1
“לְדָוִד מַשְׂכִּיל אַשְׁרֵי נְשׂוּי פֶּשַׁע כְּסוּי חֲטָאָה.”
“A Psalm of David. A Contemplation. Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered.”
Rabbi Chiya opens the discussion by quoting the above verses, saying, we learned that there are ten different psalms in the book of Tehilim (Psalms), in which they are recited, (בְּנִצּוּחַ, בְּנִגּוּן, בְּמַשְׂכִּיל, בְּמִכְתָּם, בְּמִזְמוֹר, בְּשִׁיר, בְּאַשְׁרֵי, בִּתְפִלָּה, בְּהוֹדָאָה, בְּהַלְלוּיָהּ) in chant, in tune, in Maskhil, in Michtam, in psalm (Mizmor), in song, in Ashrei, in prayer, in appreciation, and in Hallelujah. The highest of all is Hallelujah.
