106. פָּתַח רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר וְאָמַר, אַתֶּם עֵדַי נְאֻם ה’ וְעַבְדִּי אֲשֶׁר בָּחַרְתִּי לְמַעַן תֵּדְעוּ וְתַאֲמִינוּ וְגוֹ’. אַתֶּם עֵדַי, אֵלּוּ הֵם יִשְׂרָאֵל. וְשָׁנִינוּ, אֵלּוּ הֵם שָׁמַיִם וָאָרֶץ, שֶׁכָּתוּב (דברים ד) הַעִידֹתִי בָכֶם הַיּוֹם אֶת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֶת הָאָרֶץ. אֲבָל יִשְׂרָאֵל הֵם עֵדִים אֵלּוּ עַל אֵלּוּ, וְשָׁמַיִם וְאֶרֶץ וְהַכֹּל עֵדִים עֲלֵיהֶם. וְעַבְדִּי אֲשֶׁר בָּחַרְתִּי – זֶה יַעֲקֹב, שֶׁכָּתוּב (ישעיה מט) וַיֹּאמֶר לִי עַבְדִּי אָתָּה יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲשֶׁר בְּךָ אֶתְפָּאָר, וְכָתוּב אַל תִּירָא עַבְדִּי יַעֲקֹב. וְיֵשׁ אוֹמְרִים, זֶה דָּוִד. וְנִקְרָא דָּוִד עַבְדִּי, שֶׁכָּתוּב (שם לז) לְמַעֲנִי וּלְמַעַן דָּוִד עַבְדִּי אֲשֶׁר בָּחַרְתִּי, זֶה דָּוִד הָעֶלְיוֹן.
107. לְמַעַן תֵּדְעוּ וְתַאֲמִינוּ לִי וְתָבִינוּ כִּי אֲנִי הוּא (ישעיה מג). מַה זֶּה כִּי אֲנִי הוּא? שֶׁהִתְרַצֵּיתִי בְּאוֹתוֹ דָוִד וּבְאוֹתוֹ יַעֲקֹב, אֲנִי הוּא הֵם מַמָּשׁ. לְפָנַי לֹא נוֹצַר אֵל, שֶׁשָּׁנִינוּ, קָרָא הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא לְיַעֲקֹב אֵל, שֶׁכָּתוּב (בראשית לו) וַיִּקְרָא אֵל אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא קָרָא לְיַעֲקֹב אֵל. זֶהוּ שֶׁכָּתוּב לְפָנַי לֹא נוֹצַר אֵל וְאַחֲרַי לֹא יִהְיֶה. וּמִשּׁוּם כָּךְ אֲנִי הוּא, הַכֹּל, כְּמוֹ שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר. וְאַחֲרַי לֹא יִהְיֶה, שֶׁהֲרֵי דָּוִד נִקְרָא כָּךְ, וְאֵין אַחֲרָיו אַחֵר.

Rabbi Elazar opened and said,
Isaiah 43:10
“אַתֶּם עֵדַי נְאֻם יְהוָה וְעַבְדִּי אֲשֶׁר בָּחָרְתִּי לְמַעַן תֵּדְעוּ וְתַאֲמִינוּ לִי וְתָבִינוּ כִּי אֲנִי הוּא לְפָנַי לֹא נוֹצַר אֵל וְאַחֲרַי לֹא יִהְיֶה.”
“You are My witnesses,” says YHVH, “And My servant whom I have chosen, That you may know and believe Me, And understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, Nor shall there be after Me.”
“You are My witnesses,” these are Israel. And we have learned that these witnesses are the heavens and the earth, as it is written, “הַעִידֹתִי בָכֶם הַיּוֹם אֶת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֶת הָאָרֶץ” “I call heaven and earth to witness before you this day” (Deuteronomy 30:19). However, Israel themselves are witnesses for each other. The heavens and the earth, and everything else, are witnesses for them. “And My servant whom I have chosen,” this is Jacob, as it is written,
Isaiah 49:3
“וַיֹּאמֶר לִי עַבְדִּי אָתָּה יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲשֶׁר בְּךָ אֶתְפָּאָר.”
“And He said to me, ‘You are My servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified'” And it is written, “וְאַתָּה אַל תִּירָא עַבְדִּי יַעֲקֹב” “‘ Therefore do not fear, O My servant Jacob,'” Some say that this refers to David as he was called “My servant,” as it is written, “לְמַעֲנִי וּלְמַעַן דָּוִד עַבְדִּי.” “for my own sake and the sake of my servant David.” (Isaiah 37:35). “Whom I have chosen” refers to the higher David, which is the aspect of Malchut.

“So that you may know and believe Me and understand that I am He” (Isaiah 43:10). He asks, what does “אֲנִי הוּא” “I am He” mean? He answers, “I am He who chose David and Jacob. I am He, indeed.” This means that “אֲנִי” “I” includes Jacob and David. Jacob represents Zeir Anpin, which corresponds to “הוּא” “He,” and David represents Malchut, which corresponds to “אֲנִי” “I.” They are indeed the Holy One, blessed be He and His Shechina.
“Before Me, no god was formed” (Isaiah 43:10). We have learned that the Holy One, blessed be He, called Jacob “God” (El). As it is written, “He called him El, the God of Israel” (Genesis 33:20). Thus, the Holy One, blessed be He, called Jacob “El.” This is what is meant by “לְפָנַי לֹא נוֹצַר אֵל” “Before Me no god was formed”, “וְאַחֲרַי לֹא יִהְיֶה” “and after Me, there will be none” (Isaiah 43:10).
Therefore, “אֲנִי,” “I,” and “הוּא” “He” are everything. As we said, “and after Me, there will be none,” because David is also called so, for Malchut is also called “אל” “El.” And Zeir Anpin and Malchut, which are “I” and “He,” are one, and there is no other after Him.

Lesson;
Jacob represents Zeir Anpin, and David represents Malchut, symbolizing the unification of male and female aspects within the Tree of Life. The emphasis on “I” and “He” being everything underscores the fundamental principle of the absolute unity of YHVH and Malchut.
“אני והו הושיעה נא” (“I and He, save now”) is a plea recited during the Hakafot/Hoshanot prayers on the Holiday of Sukkot. The origin of this supplication is in the mitzvah of the “ערבה” willow that was performed in the Holy Temple, where the priests would pray as they circled the altar.
We are appealing to the Holy One, blessed be He, to rescue both “אֲנִי” “me/I” and “הוּא” “He” from judgments and exile. The prayer reflects a plea for mutual salvation because at the end of the Exile, Hashem, Zeir Anpin, would be in complete unification with the Shechina in Malchut.
