Zohar Acharei Mot

#262
We have learned that when the world needs mercy, the Tzadikim and virtuous ones—their Nefesh, which is present in the world to protect it—rise and go forth, wandering through the world and informing the Ruach. The Ruach then ascends, becomes adorned, and tells the Neshamah (higher level of the soul), and the Neshamah conveys this to the Holy One, blessed be He. Then, the Holy One, blessed be He, has mercy upon the world. Subsequently, messages from above descend to below, the Neshamah informs the Ruach, and the Ruach informs the Nefesh.
Notes:
The levels of the souls are Lights. The text above illustrates the interconnectedness between the different levels of the soul (Nefesh, Ruach, Neshamah) and their role in bridging the physical and spiritual realms. The righteous continue to play an essential role after their physical departure by advocating for mercy on behalf of the world. Their souls ascend through the levels to appeal directly to Hashem, and the resulting mercy is channeled back down through these same levels to influence and benefit the world. This cyclical process emphasizes the power of the Tzadikim souls in affecting Hashem’s compassion and drawing Chassadim to the world.
#263
And on every Sabbath and each Rosh Chodesh (New Moon), all—the Nefesh, the Ruach, and the Neshamah—unite and are adorned together. They join to come and bow before the Supreme King. Afterward, they return to their places. As it is written:
Isaiah 66:23
“וְהָיָה מִדֵּי חֹדֶשׁ בְּחָדְשׁוֹ וּמִדֵּי שַׁבָּת בְּשַׁבַּתּוֹ יָבוֹא כָל בָּשָׂר לְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֹת לְפָנַי אָמַר יְהוָה.”
“And it shall come to pass That from one New Moon to another, And from one Sabbath to another, All flesh shall come to worship before Me,” says YHVH.”
Notes:
Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh are significant times when individuals can achieve heightened spiritual states, uniting all aspects of their being to connect more profoundly with Hashem. It illustrates the ongoing relationship between the soul and Hashem.
On Shabbat, we can connect to the three levels of the soul through prayers, studies, and the three meals.
#264
When the world needs mercy, and the living go and inform the souls of the Tzadikim and weep at their graves—they are worthy to inform them. What is the reason they are worthy? It is because they set their will to cleave Nefesh with Nefesh. Then the souls (Nefesh) of the righteous awaken, gather, and go to the ‘ישֵׁנֵי חֶבְרוֹן’ ‘sleepers’ of Hebron (the Patriarchs) and inform them of the world’s suffering. They all ascend to the Garden of Eden entrance and inform the Ruach. These levels of Ruach, adorned in the Garden of Eden, have high angels walking among them, and they all inform the Neshamah. The Neshamah informs the Holy One, blessed be He. They all request mercy for the living, and the Holy One, blessed be He, has mercy upon the world because of them. Regarding this, Solomon said, “וְשַׁבֵּחַ אֲנִי אֶת הַמֵּתִים שֶׁכְּבָר מֵתוּ” ‘And I praise the dead who have already died.’
Notes:
By earnestly seeking to bond “Nefesh to Nefesh,” the living can activate a spiritual process wherein the Tzadikim’s souls intercede on their behalf. This process involves ascending through the levels—from the level of Nefesh to Ruach to the Neshamah—and engaging with angels and the Patriarchs, ultimately reaching Hashem. The collective plea results in Hashem’s mercy being bestowed upon the world. This teaching underscores the importance of sincere intention, the power of intercession by the righteous, and the interconnectedness of all levels of souls within the spiritual hierarchy. Solomon’s praise affirms the significant impact that the departed Tzadikim have on the well-being of the living world.
