153. בֹּא רְאֵה, בִּשְׁבִיל יַעֲקֹב הִתְקַיֵּם הָעוֹלָם. וְאִם תֹּאמַר, הִנֵּה בִּשְׁבִילוֹ שֶׁל אַבְרָהָם, כְּמוֹ שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר בְּהִבָּרְאָם, אַל תִּקְרֵי בְּהִבָּרְאָם אֶלָּא בְּאַבְרָהָם – אֶלָּא מִשּׁוּם יַעֲקֹב הִתְקַיֵּם אַבְרָהָם, שֶׁכָּתוּב (ישעיה כט) כֹּה אָמַר ה’ אֶל בֵּית יַעֲקֹב אֲשֶׁר פָּדָה אֶת אַבְרָהָם. וּמִקֹּדֶם לָכֵן הָיָה הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא בּוֹנֶה עוֹלָמוֹת וּמַחֲרִיבָם. כֵּיוָן שֶׁבָּא יַעֲקֹב, הִשְׁתַּכְלְלוּ מִמֶּנּוּ הָעוֹלָמוֹת וְלֹא נֶחְרְבוּ כְּבָרִאשׁוֹנָה. זֶהוּ שֶׁכָּתוּב כֹּה אָמַר ה’ בֹּרַאֲךָ יַעֲקֹב וְיֹצֶרְךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל וְגוֹ’.
154. בֹּא רְאֵה מַה כָּתוּב, (שמות ד) בְּנִי בְכֹרִי יִשְׂרָאֵל, וְכָתוּב שַׁלַּח אֶת בְּנִי וְיַעַבְדֵנִי. יִשְׂרָאֵל נִקְרָא בֵּן לַקָּדוֹשׁ-בָּרוּךְ-הוּא מִשּׁוּם שֶׁנִּדְבָּק בּוֹ, כְּמוֹ שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר מַה שְּׁמוֹ וּמַה שֵּׁם בְּנוֹ כִּי תֵדָע.
155. כְּשֶׁלֵּאָה הוֹלִידָה אֶת רְאוּבֵן, מַה כָּתוּב? וַתִּקְרָא אֶת שְׁמוֹ רְאוּבֵן. רְאוּבֵן סְתָם, מִשּׁוּם שֶׁנִּכְלָל בִּשְׁלֹשָׁה צְדָדִים מְחֻבָּרִים יַחַד – שִׁמְעוֹן וְלֵוִי. מָה הַטַּעַם לֵוִי? כְּמוֹ שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (מלכים-א ז) לֹיוֹת, הַחִבּוּר שֶׁל כָּל הַצְּדָדִים.

Come and see, the world exists because of Jacob. And if you say that the world exists because of Abraham, as it is written: “בְּהִבָּרְאָם”—”when they were created” (Genesis 2:4), do not read it as בְּהִבָּרְאָם (“when they were created”), but as בְּאַבְרָהָם (“for Abraham”). This interpretation suggests that the generations of the heavens and the earth were created for Abraham, as the letters בהבראם and באברהם are the same. The answer is that the world ultimately exists because of Jacob, as it is written: “כֹּה אָמַר ה’ אֶל בֵּית יַעֲקֹב אֲשֶׁר פָּדָה אֶת אַבְרָהָם”—”Thus said YHVH to the house of Jacob, who redeemed Abraham” (Isaiah 29:22).
This means that even Abraham’s existence was sustained for Jacob’s sake. During the process of Creation, the Holy One, Blessed be He, would build worlds and destroy them. But when Jacob came, the worlds were perfected through him, and they were no longer destroyed as before. This is the meaning of the verse: “כֹּה אָמַר ה’ בּוֹרַאֲךָ יַעֲקֹב וְיֹצֶרְךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל”—”Thus said YHVH, who created you, Jacob, and who formed you, Israel” (Isaiah 43:1).

Come and see what is written: “בְּנִי בְּכֹרִי יִשְׂרָאֵל”—”My firstborn son is Israel” (Exodus 4:22), and it is also written: “שַׁלַּח אֶת בְּנִי וְיַעַבְדֵנִי”—”Send out My son so that he may serve Me” (Exodus 4:23).
For Israel is called the son of the Holy One, Blessed be He because they are attached to Him. As it is stated: “מַה־שְּׁמוֹ וּמַה־שֵּׁם־בְּנוֹ כִּי תֵדָע”—”What is His name, and what is His son’s name, if you know?” (Proverbs 30:4).

When Leah gave birth to Reuben, what is written? “וַתִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ רְאוּבֵן”—”She named him Reuben” (Genesis 29:32), meaning simply “ראו בן” “See, a son,” without adding any further explanation, as she did with Shimeon, where she said: “כִּי שָׁמַע ה’ כִּי שְׂנוּאָה אָנֹכִי”—”Because YHVH has heard that I am unloved” (Genesis 29:33), and similarly with the rest of her children.
Since Reuben corresponds to the attribute of Chessed, why didn’t she name him Ben Yamin (“Son of the Right”)? The answer is that he is included within the three lines that connect as one, meaning he is united with Shimeon and Levi, who correspond to the left and middle lines.
