And the secret of the matter is in what is written:” דִּבְרֵי לְמוּאֵל מֶלֶךְ מַשָּׂא אֲשֶׁר יִסְּרַתּוּ אִמּוֹ” “The words of Lemuel, king; a prophecy which his mother taught him” (Proverbs 31:1). His mother—this refers to Bat Sheva, who corresponds to Malchut, which is called Bat Sheva (“daughter of seven”). And we have learned: It is written, “מִשְׁלֵי שְׁלֹמֹה בֵּן חָכָם יְשַׂמַּח אָב וּבֵן כְּסִיל תּוּגַת אִמּוֹ” “The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son is the grief of his mother” (Proverbs 10:1). “The grief of his mother”—certainly so. Look at what is written: “A wise son brings joy to his father”—that is, while the son walks in the proper path and is wise, he brings joy to the Father—this is the Holy King above, referring to Zeir Anpin, for it simply says “father,” pointing to the supernal Father. But if this son deviates and walks in the path of foolishness, it is written: “A foolish son is the grief of his mother.” Certainly, the grief of his mother, who is the congregation of Israel, that is, the Shechinah / Malchut. And the secret of the matter is found in the verse: “וּבְפִשְׁעֵיכֶם שֻׁלְּחָה אִמְּכֶם” “Because of your transgressions, your mother was sent away” (Isaiah 50:1)—this refers to the Shechina in Malchut.

Notes:
When Israel acts with wisdom, it gladdens Zeir Anpin, the Father. When Israel acts foolishly, it causes sorrow to the Shechinah, the Mother, and leads to her spiritual exile. The verse “Your mother was sent away due to your sins” underscores the spiritual consequence of transgression—not only for the individual but for the Divine system itself. The union between Heaven and Earth, between Zeir Anpin and Malchut, is upheld or broken by our choices.
Teshuvah as Returning the Shekhinah
The root of the word תשובה is “שוב” — to return. But the Zohar teaches that it’s not only the individual soul that returns—but we are, in truth, working to return the Shechinah to her union with the King (Zeir Anpin). This is expressed in the concept: “להשיב ה’ אל מקומו” – “to return the letter Hey (ה)** of the Hashem’s Name back to its place.” In the Tetragrammaton (YHVH), the final ה (Hey) represents Malchut, and Teshuvah restores that separated ה Hey back into unity with the ו Vav (Zeir Anpin).
“שובה אלי ואשובה אליכם” (Return to Me, and I will return to you) – Malachi 3:7 The first movement must come from below—from our soul—and then Hashem responds.
Teshuvah is not just personal redemption—It is a spiritual repair—Tikun Olam in its highest sense. Every act of Teshuvah Repairs the individual soul and restores the broken strands between Heaven and Earth. It brings the Shechinah back from exile, reuniting her with the King and healing the entire spiritual system.
Teshuvah is the Divine gift that allows humans to become co-creators of spiritual harmony. Returning to truth, we bring the Shechinah home, repair the union, and allow blessing and Hashem’s presence to flow back into the world.
