#353
That man, Elazar, lay oneself flat on the ground before Rabbi Abba. He brought him into his house and prepared for him three measures of bread (שלש סאים לחם) and a three-year-old calf (עגל משולש). After they had eaten, the man said to Rabbi Abba, “Rabbi, let me tell you something. I had a red heifer, the mother of the calf whose meat we had just eaten. One day, before she became pregnant and gave birth, I followed her to the pasture in the wilderness. While I was guiding her, a man passed by and asked me, ‘What is the name of this cow?’ I said, ‘Since the day she was born, I have never given her a name.’ He said to me, ‘She is called Bat Sheva, mother of Shlomo — if you merit atonement for your sins.’ As I turned my head, I could no longer see him. I laughed at those words.”
Notes:
Elazar shows deep honor and gratitude to Rabbi Abba by inviting him into his home and preparing a generous meal — symbolically reminiscent of Abraham’s hospitality (when the three angels came to him). During the meal, Elazar shares a mysterious and spiritually symbolic encounter: he recalls owning a red heifer (which, in Torah law, is linked to purification from impurity). Before it birthed the calf they were eating, a mysterious man appeared and gave it a prophetic name — “Bat Sheva, mother of Shlomo” — alluding to royalty, wisdom, and spiritual repair. The mysterious man disappears immediately after — a classic signal of an angelic or prophetic encounter. Elazar, not understanding the message, laughed at the time. But in hindsight, this event foreshadowed his own spiritual rebirth — the heifer and her calf being symbolic of purification and the birthing of new holiness (just as Shlomo was born to Bat Sheva after King David’s atonement).
Even seemingly mundane events (a cow, a stranger, a laugh) can carry deep spiritual meaning that is only understood later.
However, it is important to understand that in our times, a person should not attempt to interpret personal events or dreams as “messages” from Heaven on their own. Without deep Torah grounding, especially in the inner wisdom of Kabbalah, one may misinterpret natural occurrences or fall into confusion and even spiritual danger. Only a Torah scholar with knowledge of sod (deeper Kabbalistic interpretation) and yirat shamayim (fear of Heaven) is fit to discern such hidden meanings, and even then, only when necessary. Therefore, one should focus on sincere teshuvah, Torah study, and mitzvah observance, trusting that Hashem’s guidance will manifest in the right way at the right time.
